Not planning on needing one but good to know that there are options.

what's everyone thought about Chain Quick Links?

I have one, and finally got the quick link pliers (waaaaaay easier then needle nose). It makes cleaning a chain soooo easy

Yeah man, they're such time savers with the pliers. You're using yourself a disservice by not using them.

My shimano 105 chain has a quick link. Officially, the quick links aren't reusable. Do you guys reuse it? or just have stashes of new ones each time you take off your chain for cleaning?

i reused mine and have put on another 200+ km on the trainer since doing it.. no issues so far. I also feel that a trainer puts more strain than real life

All my chains came with one. Pro tip: don't drop the quick link down the drain otherwise any time savings will be thrown out trying to fish it out

I'm ghetto enough to reuse a pin, so yeah I have no problems reusing a quick link hahaha

lol yeah with enough patience, I'v been able to re-use old pins but figured since i'm building/upgrading bike parts, might as well get a quick link now. seems like in the long run it will be more convenient.

Any recommendations for a backyard bike mechanic? or does everyone on here do all their own wrenching?
My winter commute bike is in need of some love that's beyond my skill level/desire to learn/tool ownership.

I haven't tried Joe's service myself. But I believe he's on beyond, and the beyond.ca strava group.

I trust myself only to simple things like cleaning, replacing a chain, tire, and very minor gear shifting issue.

Sold the Opus on Friday which motivated me to finally build a new road bike (plus the handlebar finally arrived)

Only thing left is to upgrade the wheels later this year or next year.

Now waiting for the 40T chainring for the JTS for a 1x10 setup

Looks good, Earl. How much did you sell the Opus for?

Sold it for 700$ which IMO is a pretty good deal for someone looking to get into road bike.
Had it listed on kijiji since February but who would buy a road bike during one of the coldest winter lol.
People started finally inquiring more in early April and a lady finally picked it up on Friday (didnt include the clipless pedals, saddle, seatpost and accessories though)

lol my wife put me on a really low budget, so I decided to purvey the used market for a 29er hardtail and found a setup that I'll build from.

She put me on a budget because I had a heckler that I kept breaking things in, took up my time riding and with tinkering, and now that I have kids and blew up my knee, she was like... does it pull a Chariot? Good.

Anyways, I'm not going to go too hardcore, but this is a Trek Gary Fisher 29er with the G2 frame, which I really liked the old genesis with the really slack XC type of hardtail frame

Problem is, its a 2.25 on a Alexrim 622x17... which I think is a very small rim, and isn't tubeless... so I'm thinking that maybe, I can build up a set of tubeless wheels that I can fit up to a 2.8 plusish tire on it...

Also the groupset and brakes could use an upgrade, as its a deore/xt combo and the brakes are still CABLE manual tektros... (well that said, they work well lol!)

I'm prolly not going to spend the cash on a reverb, but I think upgrading to good hydraulics... newer 1X setup as I build out new wheels... that would give me a pretty good trail bike

    question though...

the 1X conversion... not much parts on the used market as its quite sought after... is SLX good enough for a shifter/derailleur?

I have a 9 speed Alfine internal hub on my hybrid bike, that I could also use to go to a single conversion, which I've seen MTBers using as of late... maybe thats a good option?

Hydraulic brakes... whats a good balance for price/performance? I'm thinking how much better could a set of XT brakes be than Deore other than weight?

Boost wheels... to build up a boost rim, do I need wider axels and can that be retrofitted?

Well... started on this last night... should be interesting. Went a different route with it than I thought I was going to.

And 8hrs of sanding, masking, and paint later...

Brushed steel tubes, black lugs, exposed braising... just waiting for the clear to dry, then wet sand and reassemble

When I was at it I also chopped off the rear brake cable holders. Very clean frame now

Are you completely stripping it down to the metal? Would look sweet if you can prevent it from oxidizing.

Edit: you answered my question already in your last post. Looks neat!

Of of those... “you have to see it in person” finishes I think... even though the black paint and clear were the same friggin brand, the clear gave the paint a crinkle effect... kinda works though with more of an antique-y finish
