Default Building a Passive home at the Cottage Club

    Hello Beyond,

Hoping someone can offer recommendations for our current heating situation.

We are building a very efficient cottage that will be lived in year round. We're having an issue on deciding how to heat the home. We will have a backup wood stove but I don't want to rely on the stove. The issue is we won't have access to gas, electric will be our only method for heating besides wood/pellet.

    Specs:

1600Sqft over 3 floors including the basement

    R40 Sip Panel Walls
    R35 Basement Walls
    R60 Sip Panel Roof
    Triple Pane Windows
    7kW DC Solar System

We are currently looking at Mitsubishi Zuba Central HeatPump system which has a lot good feedback. http://mitsubishielectric.ca/en/hvac/zuba-central/

We may consider GeoThermal but has a big upfront cost.

    Any recommendations?

Really easy to have propane heat and a bullet for winter use. Not at all uncommon. So don't cross the idea of "gas" type heat off your list.

Geothermal and heat pumps are designed for the exact opposite of Alberta. Better be burning propane when it hits -20 or you will have a lot of wood chopping or $1000 electric bills.

    Solar.

Either air-> heatsink, think they call it passive solar. Use it in greenhouses a lot.

Or run some solar water heaters to a boiler type scenario.

Have seen Zuba's in a house with 12kW PV solar array (2 zubas for ~4300 sf). Generally sufficient solar generation to remain comfortable year-round (they heat & cool). The municipality forced the owner to use a gas-fired boiler & fan coil as backup for when it dips below -25, so you may need to supplement with an on-demand electric water heater & fan coil in your situation.
