except that the parks and pathways are accessible and free to all... not the elite few.
If you don't make use of the free amenities, that's your own fault, but when someone cant shell out $$$ for tickets for whatever event is at the arena, that's not benefiting and accessible to everybody, so it shouldn't be paid for by the city (AKA, everybody)..
I grew up poor, so I never went to a Flames game until I was in my 20's. I was a Flames fan for over a decade before that. Having a team in the city isn't just for the elite.

Until the team fucks off to Seattle because they don't have a new arena, and you don't get to watch the Calgary Flames anymore on TV. My point is, there are SOME public benefits even for those that don't go to games.

The team will not move. The other BoGs will break Edward's kneecaps before they move the team.

Truth. Growing up, my family barely had food on the table and cars and trucks were usually given to us that my dad and I had to fix up to make them usable. One of my fondest memories was watching Hockey Night in Canada with my Dad and brother on peasant vision. (for those of you that don't know, peasant vision was when you didn't have cable TV, and had to hold rabbit ears in akward positions to get a semi-clear TV picture on 1 of 3 channels, CBC being one of them). Going to an actual game was out of the question, but occasionally, someone would give my dad tickets and to me, it was like we won the lottery. As far back as I can remember, I have been a Flames fan, and I don't think I bought my first ticket until i was 25ish...

I think the team moving is a very real possibility and an option that is front an center. Moving the team to Seattle is IMO a net zero affect to the league. It is close enough that the Flames wouldn't have to change confrences and/or divisions and so really doesn't influence anything. If they were going to try and move the team out east, then you are correct, the BoG wouldn't allow it, but to Seattle? I think it has a very good chance of approval from the BoG.

again, I agree. I can't count the number of times the Flames or the Stamps or whatever goto the children's hospital, or help with other charities like Make a wish etc. They are always ready to step up to the plate.

And even if it is not in person, these pro athletes can have a HUGE impact on youth. I hate wrestling (WWE) but recently, I have been hearing a TON about Jon Cena. I thought it was all hype, but then I saw a few videos and how he has touched people's lives and the charity work he does. Blew my mind away. I know that guys like Jhonny G, Monny, Gio, Iginla, Lanny, etc...These guys are all in the same boat, and truely are local heros to many kids and families. If the Flames take off to Seattle, do you really think the Oilers or Canucks are going to make trips to Calgary to do the same?

I can't agree that the Flames do not benefit the public unless you buy a ticket. I am of quite the opposite mind.

I was speaking to a (now former) insider who was very familiar with NHL players' charity work. The story I got was much different. The players' charity work is largely contract based, and the players (as per their own preference) are generally pretty isolated and difficult to approach. Things have changed a lot since the days of the player growing up in Red Deer, living in Calgary and doing charity work. A top end pro athlete in any of the major sports is now a mini-enterprise. They don't identify with their city, but come in for "work", live elsewhere, and have little interest in the community, make bank, and retire.

Move money making team or move money losing team? Or better yet, make HALF A BILLION DOLLARS IN EXPANSION FEES.

What would you do? REMEMBER, THE FLAMES GET A PORTION OF THAT EXPANSION FEE.

If Calgary loses the one decent pro sports team we have, I'll definitely start looking at Denver more seriously.

For a reminder for anyone that is low on funds and wants to go to a game.. currently the pre-season tickets are as low as $10 on kijiji. For someone with kids or is new to the game, its a good way to get in. Best deal I saw was $50 for 4 tickets (PL) plus $20 of food vouchers per ticket. Crappy view, but thats a hell of a deal for someone with a tight budget.

Except there have been no other ownership groups interested in paying that ridiculous expansion fee. The Seattle team even said they wouldn't.

Murray won't move the team, he will just sell it in 5-10 years if there is still no new arena. Good luck finding owners here when you can't get an arena built.

maybe a new owner would take the cities deal and build a new arena here for 300 mil instead of spending 500 mil for the expansion fee.

As an potential new owner if you saw the entire Flames organization turn down the deal wouldn't you view that as a clear indication it wasn't a good model for them to stay and keep the team in the first place?

Seattle is already set in motion to complete construction for an NBA and NHL team, until then they will lurk by waiting for franchises to buy up in both leagues and move them over.

If the Flames turn into a 'have not' team and are on the revenue sharing recieving/equalization side, you better believe the BOG would be open to a move or sale...A lot depends on external factors like the exchange rate, but if the arena cant produce enough revenue you can bet if they move there wont be another team taking its place in the Saddledome.

I think there is definitely an owner(s) out there who would take Calgary's deal.

I heard the Flames turned down perspective buy-ins before even though the team was in the saddledome. Obviously we don't know what % they wanted but I think it's not unlikely that it would get done.

honestly though, if you were a hockey fan, you''d have just picked a different team... we don't have a baseball team, so i cheer for the Jays, we don't have NFL or NBA teams, but many people here are fans, where they physically play, might give you a bit more of an attachment, but really if you enjoy the sport, you'll find a team to support, no matter the physical separation.
