Default Small Business Accountant / Lawyer Recommendations

    Hey guys,

Starting up a small business and was hoping to get some recommendations & referrals for accounting / legal services. Ideally someone with experience in oil and gas / tax planning would be great.

Also what are the typical rates I should be expecting to budget? $150-250/hr for an accountant / $250-400/hr for a lawyer?

    Thanks!

You may not need a lawyer, and except for once a year for your annual return, you don't need an accountant that often. Unless you have them doing the bookeeping too, but usualyl startup companies you would do your own books.

I'm nearly two years into my small business adventure, we should sit down for a coffee and chat. I'm an O&G dude too.

I paid around $1300 for a lawyer to set up my company and they would represent me at their typical hourly rate should I ever need them beyond that. TimPro also sets up companies at around $600 a pop or you can do it yourself for much cheaper. An accountant for your yearly filings should be around $1200-$1400 probably from what I've seen and paid.

Went this route and the costs were the same. Very easy.

Thanks guys, yeah we'd be doing our own books and using an accountant to do the yearly filing. It was more getting some advice on optimal initial setup to minimize tax burden / also ensure each shareholder can realize the personal capitals gains exemption if the company were to ever sell in the future.

For the lawyer, I wanted to get someone with legal expertise to review a Unanimous shareholder's agreement. The actual incorporation / share setup is pretty straight forward.

You don't need a lawyer to do an annual return. Do it online yourself for $20 compared to the lawyer's $200.
