Default The last time you wrote a cheque?

So with the ever increasing move to a cashless society, I am curious how often people still write checks or if they even have a true checking account that they can write checks on. I honestly can not remember the last time I wrote a check and with no kids in school any more I just do not see any future need to write a check as tbat was about the only thing we were writing checks to.

I find myself doing Interac e-transfers more often, even for kijiji purchases and have moved to doing deposits of checks written to me being done on a mobile app - the actual need of any physical representation of cash is rapidly disappearing from my life.

Anyhow, how many people are still writing checks and if do, how often? Amazingly you cam still pay for groceries at Safeway with a check.
    Will fuck off, again.

The last two I wrote were for roofing and electrical work.

With my new bank account I get free certified cheques so now I will never write a cheque again as I live within walking distance of my branch.

I laugh every time I go to the Safeway near me and see the "we no longer accept cheques" sign

Still do for business. Haven't had a checking account for personal since the 90's.

Couple years ago for rent when I was going to SAIT, was a better way of keeping track of the money and proof of payment.

Also a void cheque for work at the beginning of the year.
My old job wrote cheques instead of direct deposit. It was the worst!!!

I usually pay rent by check when it's convenient.

Problem with eTransfer is that's it's fairly limited in terms of how much money you can transfer. Not a big deal for small payments, but if you sling cash around like most of Beyond, it's pretty useless.

When I was running my own business I used to write myself cheques because the amount of money I was transferring was much more than eTransfer would accept, so used them often.

I just got two cheques this week from a friend for the things I covered during the Brazil trip ($4k) and parents paid off a loan I gave them for $7k, so there are still uses.

The last cheque I personally wrote was to drop a ton of money into RRSP a few months back. I usually use cheques to move money from one bank to the other, so most of the time they are addressed to me

going to write a cheq in 7 days to the City of Calgary for property taxes.. I still shake my head at people on Tips, why would you want to give the city their money early? it's not like they are giving you a discount by paying early..

Online banking handles property tax payments. Any reason why you rather use a cheque?

This. I set it and forget it like much of my day to day bill payments. This way I never forget so don't get penalized if I miss a payment. I'm notoriously bad for that. Every year I end up being one of the last people to renew my vehicle because I completely space on it (especially now without the mailed reminders).

I wrote a check when I set up my business for my shares within the company but before then its been a long long time. Kijiji I pay cash, SIL pays me via e-transfer for rent, everything else is credit card. I saw an old lady pay for her groceries via cheque the other day. I can't remember if it was costco or where I was in okotoks.

I write two a year to pay for my RV storage, and if I ever need money from the HELOC I write a cheque to myself.

Once every month or two on average. Just shit that comes up that doesn't take cc and it's more convenient to write a cheque than to go get cash.

I get free cheques with my bank account so I am pretty liberal with them.

I'm surprised more people with kids aren't chiming in about cheques - can't get away from the damn things when you've got kids. It's slowly going to eTransfers, but lots of places aren't with it yet.

Cheques for: all sorts of sports stuff for the kids - volunteer deposits, fundraising, jersey deposits, tournament deposits (see a theme here?). Then you've got child care - most day homes/etc require post-dated cheques for every month, and if you've got kids in different day homes like we did for awhile, that doubles the number you need. Plus I know people who have personal services (housecleaners, etc) who still typically prefer cheques or cash, but it's usually easier to write a cheque than make sure to always have cash on hand.

Last year was the first year the captain of my rec hockey team would take eTransfers, so for 12yrs before that it was cheque only.

It's slowly going to eTransfers, but especially for things like deposits, I don't see a lot of places getting away from that anytime soon.

wtf? why would I want to make sure I put money away all year and then end up having to give up $3500 ? it makes much more sense for them to just take it out monthly rather than having to remember to do it.

we do it because it's easier, and it's less of a mind fuck at the end of the year.

I've gone through two full check books in the past 10 years. I write them as much as I can for billing/accounting purposes. I'm a contractor, so clients pay my company from the invoices I send them. I just write myself cheques (as personal income) every month and send the stubs to my accountant at the end of the year. I also write them to pay any subcontractors I may have.

As far as purchasing things, I never use them.
