    I have a u-lock / cable combo: http://store.bowcycle.com/product/kr...le-80823-1.htm

Rarely use it as I bring my bike into work with me on the rare occasion that I ride to work. Stay away from cheap cable locks - they're easy to cut and I've lost a bike that way. Reputable lock companies tend to have some form of reimbursement if they get cut assuming you register your bike with them.

I just started biking so have enjoyed reading this. Also some of the reviews you guys have provided on items (pumps, etc) have help in my own purchasing. I do have one question. What kind of lock(s) do you guys have?
I carry kryptonite cable locks. A 20mm HardWire 2085 Key Cable, and a KryptoFlex 1218 Combo Cable.

Now - I generally park in card access secure underground parking with my commuter bike that I'm not too concerned about. So I mostly use just the one lock around the front wheel/frame.
If I ride one of my other nicer bikes I add the combo cable lock around the frame and rear wheel. Locks get left in underground parking, so I don't have to carry them. (which can also influence your lock choice)

As for tool kit - I've added a tire boot after a sidewall tear, and corresponding 3 flats on my last race.

I use this combo on my bike in a secure underground parkade at work (and occasionally outdoors, but not for long periods of time).

Lately I've been considering getting a lightweight, easy to stow lock for 7-11 breaks / water fills during long rides. Any recommendations?

Folding lock like a Bordo 6050, Litelok or similar. Or Cable ties...lol

At work I have a U-lock and for rides where I foresee stopping inside a store then I carry a small kryptonite cable and lock. (otherwise I go inside with my bike )

Regarding the carry kit, for me it's still a tire patch kit, tire lever and pump, I've had to repair tires twice now while on a ride.
I also started carrying disposable plastic gloves and napkins in case I have runny nose or the chain fell off.

BTW, I bought this to help me put tires back on the wheel, too bad it's a little big as otherwise I would always carry it with me too haha

I've seen a few people pulled over getting their chains back on during my rides home. Can't you just use the front derailleur to get the chain back on? I think only twice in my life have I ever had a derail that required me to get it back on with my hands and those were downhill riding where I jammed it really bad.

Not sure if people don't know the derailleur trick or something?

Edit: I guess if you don't have a front derailleur this doesn't apply but it never seems to be people I see with a single up front!

Did something puncture the tires or was in just the tube failing? I've been running Tubeless this year and it's been awesome.

what derailleur trick are you referring to?

my chain fell off while downshifting the FD, happened only once so far though.

first one was tube failure, second one was a piece of glass that punctured both tire and tube along 4th street.

Chain falls off inside continue pedalling slowly, shift front derailleur to a larger cog, slowly pedal chain back on, continue riding. Falls off outside shift down to a smaller cog instead.

I've done it that way since I had a bike with more than one gear on the front. Maybe twice had to actually get off due to a bad derail/jam.

Generally speaking, I don't leave my roadie or MTB outside.
Yeah, I typically don't like leaving my bikes out, but if I do I'll bring my beater bike with me.

I don't like doing it, but sometimes if I absolutely have to, I'll bring my bike inside and lean it against a wall that's out of everyone's way.

Those locks are 1/2 the cost of my bike. Might have to go with cable ties lol

I found this same lock on Amazon for $75 so it's been ordered. Thanks!

I've done that too...some places are bitchy about it (like that one broad at the Inglewood spice shop. "Blocking the product" my ass.)
Most places are pretty cool with me leaving my bike somewhere out of the way and not right next to the door if I'm scooting in for 20 seconds to pick something up (or just keeping it with me).

I get it, bikes are super annoying regardless where they're put. Not really fair if everyone decides to do it.

I totally do too! But I'm a pretty practical fella, and when there are only two people in the shop (myself included) when they first opened and I only need 3 things (and know exactly where they are) - I think there's value in being reasonable given the context of the situation. Totally different story if it's "rush hour" and I'm wanting to park my shit all over the place for an hour.

Goes to show you how green I am to Cycling! from your experience do you have any duty on items? I ask this because the lock would have been $10 cheaper, but it says it's subject to duty which could eat up the savings.

on ChainReaction, if you buy more than 75$ then shipping is free.
depending on the products that you are buying you may be subject to custom fees.
DHL charged me over 20$ of fees for 100$ worth of item but Canada Post only charged me about 40$ for over 900$

but basically you could buy the lock and extra (spare tires/tubes) to make it 75$ then it will be
-free shipping through Canada Post and maybe not charged for custom
-DHL shipping for about 12$ including all fees/custom

Came across this while I was browsing Amazon for stuff to add to my cart for free shipping. Should be good enough to stop an opportunist while grabbing a coffee or filling water bottles with the bike in plain sight.

So based on the information in this thread, here's what I've put together for a carry kit.

    - tire levers
    - patch kit
    - multi-tool
    - portable pump
    - spare tube
    - latex gloves

Everything but the pump fits in the top tube bag.
