Default Depositing cash in Hong Kong to your Canadian bank's account?

Dumb question because I've never had to do this and I'm hoping some beyonders who have spent more time here can answer this...

If I was in Hong Kong, and got some cash in Canadian from a relative (big stack of Canadian bills), can I just go to any ABM and put it in as a deposit back into my Canadian bank's account?!

I seriously doubt it. It's really rare for an ATM to accept foreign currency. There's a few in Calgary that take (and dispense) USD, but that's an exception.
I would suggest bringing it home with you physically. Is it more than 10,000? If so, you do need to report it.

Bank of China (in hk) has multi currencies within the same account number. You got to setup with a teller, given the amount of $$$ you should make it to their VIP banking, private room, free bottled water, away from regular peasant line ups

I wonder if I can just pay a fee and wire it to Canada.

Deposit into Bitcoin or Ethereum, withdrawal when back in Canada.

Ultimately do you plan to bring the $2,000 Cdn back to Canada? Or are you just (converting as you travel) and just spending it there... if you're just spending it there... imo, wouldn't worry, it's common to luge around $$ when you travel there, just split it among different pockets.

If you want to cheaply wire to yourself, then you could use western union. HSBC would be the simplest option to deposit if you already have an account set up with them.

Money laundering or laws within the jurisdiction? Just like TD in Canada and US are not connected.

    As for OP,

Asian countries still like cash in most places. If you are buying currency with $cdn anyway, just buy it with cash on hand.

$2k in hundreds is not really a big stack and you wouldn't even have to declare it coming home. You're making a big deal out of nothing.

I think he doesn't want to carry it to Hanoi and get stolen or something.

Yup, the hotels in Sapa didn't even have a useful safe....anyways, I ended up buying one of those Excel gum packs shaped like a cylinder, and put it in there so at least it wouldn't look like there'd be $2000 in it.

Came back to Canada and went to deposit it into a BMO atm at Market Mall and the stupid thing miscounted and shorted me by $300 ..still waiting to hear back from them.
