On the HVAC front, just wondering if anyone has retrofitted an HRV system into an early 90's home. Parents recently had a Home Energy audit done and the person who came to do the pre-inspections suggested that's something to consider. The Carrier furnace is also from the '90s and has been running like clockwork. Thinking there's more bang for the buck with the triple pane low-E windows + doors and more attic insulation vs. swapping for a high-efficiency furnace and HRV
Absolutely. If anybody suggests replacing the existing mid efficient furnace, ask them what the ROI will be. Hint: the number starts with ♾.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I would strongly think that an HRV is a terrible idea in a house from the 90's. I believe they mainly exist to compensate for tight houses having almost zero air infiltration and so you end up ironically needing to pull cold air in from outside and the HRV let's you scavenge some heat from the air you wasted all that money heating before you send it outside. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. I don't think there were tight houses in the 90's.

I really want to pull these kind of reports from my nest. I looked at doing it via API, but they changed to the google one, and now I need to pay $5 to setup an account. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I spent an awful lot of money for sensors that don't control anything. probably not an efficient use of my money, but I love my sensors.

35C outside and I’m whining it’s not hot enough.
At the same time my kid overrides my thermostat setting from 22C to 24.5C and I’m whining like a bitch.

I did a pad-mount on my new build, but the unit is tucked behind a little cantilevered section, in a fenced area, and on stone, so no worries about dog pee or vegetation. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
biggest thing for me was minimizing any potential for vibration coming into the house. That little bastard spins and while it seems pretty solid and well damped, I'm sure it would resonate somewhere in the house and drive us nuts.

Not the simplest or cheapest method. One of those lacrosse weather stations with multiple sensors is the simple way.
