There is likely some device directly on the unit that prevents lower temp operation. I seem to remember having dealt with that before on our unit.

gavin came by to investigate, it was the low temp switch on the unit, very sensitive as the ac is in the shade and side of the house with the wind. ecobee will be the low limiter now based on weather temperature rather than the switch.

Our unit is always shaded as well, almost never will run at ambient temp of 16*C. Tbh I didn't realize there was an option to change the LL temp source, I might look into that.

He likely just bypassed the mechanical switch outside by moving one control wire.

How much risk is there in doing this? If the AC is running when ambient is below the LL (according to the outside unit temp), isn't that like... not great? The LL is set for a reason, no? Or is it just super conservative..

If you tried to start the outdoor unit in winter, most of the refrigerant would be sitting in the compressor in liquid form. Compressors don’t like slugging liquid (can’t compress) or it simply washes the oil from the lower crankshaft bearing. Just turn the 240v breaker off from Oct to June each year. Some power hungry resi units have a crankcase heater to extend the season.

yup as above, it’s up to me to be careful now, he removed/bypassed the temp switch, the ecobee has a setting in it for backup now, and the breaker will be off during winter. this could be solved with the low ambient kit but not really needed, more for commercial applications

why do you want your outdoor unit to even run in those low outdoor temps?

it didn’t run at 16 degrees yesterday evening, inside was 23.5 without opening the windows or whatever, i just simply want it to run, the switch is 12.8 degrees, so it’s too high in my opinion.

12°c is the supply air temp from your a/c. It’s not a magically number, it means open your windows instead of killing baby seals, at that temperature outside.

True. If I wanted fresh air I'd go boating in a new Wakesetter.

Meat spoils quickly above 4°C and I’m made of meat, so keep the house at 3. Live forever.
