I personally would not own another 2 story plus basement home without 2 true HVAC zones. This is not nessecsrilly a popular opinion but I think it’s an accurate one.

A skinny infill just exacerbates the problem.

Room is probably 200-220 sqft or so
3 large windows facing east, they open about 20 degree maybe (dont slide, just open out with a crank)
    Have not blocked air flow
Per above you'll want to start with tinting the windows
Because they're crank type, you won't be able to get a window unit. You're stuck with portable.
For the portable, the exhaust hose will require some fabricated panel.

I've got this one I could sell. Used for 2 seasons. Cooled a 250sqft north facing room in about an hour before bed.
    PM if interested.

Had issues with my A/C running for hours and unable to drop the temp overnight. I think the unit was just struggling. Swapped my filters this morning and rinsed the outside unit some more. We'll see how it does today before I call in a servicing company.

Is it blowing cold from the vents?

If so it’s probably the capability of the unit. Once it’s hot and the suns still up it’s actually pretty tough to drop the temp in the house.

Generally you want to be dropping by small increments. If you let the house heat to 25c or something and then turn on the AC, you are in for a bad time.

AC is much less efficient at cooling a house than a furnace is at heating a house. There's legit thermodynamic reasons for that, but the why isn't really important.

    Keep house cold all day.

Is the heat due to big windows facing the evening sun? That's why our West-facing bedroom still gets warm in the evening despite having A/C (though it's definitely better than without the A/C). If so, you might look into getting some tint - that's what we're doing and since it's very obvious that big window is where most of the heat is coming from (I've measured 50C behind the blinds on a summer evening), it should help a ton based on what the tint guys are telling me anyway. The film goes on the exterior and apparently rejects up to 90% of the solar energy.
No, but my house is old (i.e. poorly insulated), has dark grey siding, and half our main floor has vaulted 2-storey ceilings. Already have central AC, I'm just annoyed with how poorly air circulates between floors. A previous owner cut 1/3 of the master suite off into another bedroom, and covered the only cold air return on the second floor in the process. I cut another one in to the only spot that works when we did some renos, but it is not effective.

    It's blowing "cool", not cold.

It dropped from 22 to 21 after running the entire night. Last summer it could drop the house from 25 to 18 in ~3 hours during the evening (thanks nest pre-cooling).

That sounds like the system needs to be charged. My guess is that you haven't had it serviced in a while or it's leaking somewhere.

Could be. No idea how often it's supposed to be serviced. For some reason, I assumed it was only 2-3 years old, but I guess it's been 4 years now.

I’ve never done SFA to maintain my AC units. Might just be bad luck.

I had gavin come by and even though he said it didn't need it, he did a little recharge once. I don't do any "maintenance" annually. change the filter to a shitty one, flip the breaker and let's go.

just saves you from your kids touching the thermostat when it's -30C outside and wrecking the whole thing. There may be safety features, but I don't trust them. Or my kids. I flip the breaker.

I was told modern AC have a safety built in where they won’t turn on it it’s something like 5° or lower. I still do the breaker thing though, and also set my upstairs ecobee to heat only mode instead of auto. Last thing you want is your wife or kid to accidentally flip it on during a chinook and have it run for a while with the cover on.

My ecobee won’t even let you put the system in cool or auto mode if the ambient temp drops below a certain level.

I appreciate the value of ES’s rationale though, any safety process can fail and it’s easy to prevent a severe outcome by taking extra steps.

It needs to be so simple a rig-hand can't fuck it up. That way my kids might not fuck it up.

Now what we really need is protections to keep a Calgary officer worker who is touring the site from fucking it up. Then it will be truly safe.

Then again kids aren’t that stupid.

I thought the breaker switch was mostly if you run a winter cover... you need to avoid firing it up with the cover on it (obviously).
