Gavin just completed our install on the tempstar. Painless transaction, unit seems great so far.

Woah, he did my house today also. Slimline unit. Now to play around with my Ecobee settings.

Sorry, meant to say he did it on Weds.

I'm pretty impressed with the noise level of the tempstar, a lot quieter than the other one we had.. He also hooked up our ecobee which was nice. Haven't had a chance to mess around with it yet, but we aren't living there until the reno is complete.

I've got a couple of portable AC units if anyone wants them. Moving and hoping to not take them with me.

+1 for Gavin. Really took the time to make sure everything is done properly. Had some issues with our older home and its 2 wire system, but he actually spent the time to help us figure out how to make it work. He couldn't easier just said we needed a $700 wireless thermostat system and move on. That was appreciated.

Don't forget to check your humidifier (if you have one). Some will have a knob that controls a flap to either open or closed. Mine is supposed to be set to "closed" at the beginning of summer when I fire up the A/C and "open" in the winter when the humidifier is running.

Thanks for the reminder. Just ran down and flipped it.

Thanks, remembered to do that. Turned the humidifier off as well.

Does anyone have or know where I can borrow/rent a vacuum pump? I bought and installed a DIY kit from senville and am at the last step where I just need to pull a vacuum then wait 20 minutes and open the refrigerant.

So this Gavin guy, does he do this for a living or something? If all these AC units have like a 10 year warranty, and Gavin decides he's done with AC installs, can the warranty work be done by someone else?

He's been doing it for more than 10 years.

Warranty is with the manufacturer and not with the installer anyway.

Gavin did a great job but even with closing all my basement vents and half on the main floor I can't get cool air to circulate well enough to cool the second level to 21c.

    Any suggestions?

What happens if you leave all the vents open?

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

I have issues getting air to the upstairs back bedroom as well. Have found there not much that helps. Find the only thing that helps is just taking a long time and leaving all interior doors and vents open.
Would actually like a booster fan for that one bedroom. Never have bothered.
My new furnace fan seems to be stronger when it's on high compared to OEM. Hasn't changed the situation in that back bedroom but I imagine it cools the rest of the house slightly faster.

how many ton ACs did you guys get installed and how big is your house?
(I'm getting quotes for an AC install myself so trying to decide for myself as well)

I've always been told by HVAC people to leave every single vent open in the house (basement can be closed off if unfinished and unused but the rest leave open)
because it screws up the pressure balancing, leading to a build up of pressure in the vents and positive/negative pressure zones in the house

Ummm. That is the whole point of balancing the vents. You want similar CFMs moving through each vent. The vents closer to the furnace will obviously push max volume and decrease as you get further. Simple physics really. I find that only large outfits actually carry anemometers to be able to measure each vent. Most give the same advice you got cause they are too lazy to balance the vents.
