Trying to get a minisplit system squared away on the condo in Edmonton.

220v and copper lines are already roughed into the condo, so no penetration (heh) approval required by the board.

For a job that is essentially put the condensor outside, attach the wiring that is already there, connect to the copper tubes that are already there, tear out some chunks of drywall and mount the fan unit inside, I'm averaging $4k plus in quotes.

Thinking I might pickup a cheap Senville unit ($1k cdn shipped) and do it myself, pay an HVAC guy just to connect the copper lines and vac/charge the AC system.

Just ranting I suppose, $4k seems overkill when the hard work is already done.

I paid quite a bit less than that for central AC a couple years ago. That seems insane.

It was ~4400 for 2500 sq ft home from W&J when I was asking for quotes. Said it could be $750-1k more next year. Not sure if he was trying to sell me on buying a unit now and installing it later, but who knows.

It's time for my seasonal advice to get a quieter machine. 3db is the threshold for "noticeably quieter" and to me, totally worthwhile.

That's because a reduction of 3dB is half the noise level.
Aside from smugly stating "it's logarithmic" I don't understand it, at all.
I prolly still deserve a throat punch though...

3dB reduces the wife's complaints by 100%, but the neighbors by 0%, thus resulting in a 50% noise reduction.

If you fuck the neighbour's wife and/or dad, the complaints end in a big hurry.

thanks for the contact info all, I think I'm gonna go with Gavin, he gave me three options to consider (4350-4600), and WJ was 4200+GST with Trane (2000sqft 2 storey), so hopefully install will be May!

Pad. Bracket will transfer more noise into your house (not much, but some).

For those concerned about noise, apparently there are covers that you can install inside the AC unit that basically blankets the compressor. Supposed to be good for a substantial noise reduction.

Dunno if it's been talked about, but noise seems to be a common concern. They are available on Amazon and whatnot.

Have you used one? Do you have a link, or a name to search?

I have done zero research on the subject, but something tells me it would have an impact on the lifespan of the compressor if you wrap it in a blanket. Otherwise, why wouldn't companies would be doing that from the outset?

Companies aren't interested in cheap modifications that make their product more desirable. That's the only logical conclusion.
