I am getting quotes for an install next year.
Is there a preferred brand for AC units?

Any of the major brands with a decent warranty are fine. Just look at noise/efficiency specs if any of that is important to you. I got the impression Lennox seems to be a cut above the rest, but at the end of the day if it lasts 10+ years who cares. They are relatively simple devices. What I found was that it's like appliances - for every person who says X brand is the best, there is one that has had nothing but problems with it. My installer for example won't deal with Carrier anymore because he said he spent all his time doing warranty repairs on them. The next installer might have the opposite opinion.

I don’t have a preference on brands, just a general hate for all things LG. Whichever brand you do choose, make it be known you only want a Copeland compressor in the outdoor unit and don’t budge on this request.

I am assuming not all brand will mention what type of compressor their AC unit use?

You are probably right, but the info should be available if you dig further or ask the contractor. Might be as simple as looking at the photos the manufacturer provides.

    Just google search.

Lennox and Goodman use Copeland. So does carrier. Trane uses it's own that is built by Trane and Copeland (whatever that means).

Some units will have Tecumseh compressors. Stay away from those ones.

I googled couple brands such as Daikin and it doesn’t specify what compressor they use in the spec sheet. Hence I was wondering if it’s an industry secret.

I’ll give few places a call.

One of their heat pumps calls it out.

Yup. That one is a Copeland.

The one that is recommended to me is their Daikin Fit model. It use a New Swing compressor. Not sure if that’s a just rebrand. Waiting for Daikin and the installation company to email me back.

I wouldn’t spend my money on some proprietary experimental pump. Keep it simple, be happy.

    Kimchi fiend!

I think LG is pretty well directly responsible for everything mechanical going to shit these days since they OEM for so many manufacturers.

Do you guys cover your AC units for the winter?

Have read its better not to cover it? Or just cover the top only so it doesn't trap in moisture.

I do not. I think it doesn't matter in a dry climate like Calgary.

No. It will just make a shelter for rodents and has no benefit.

Is it a reasonable time to get a quote? Anyone know if pricing has come down?

From what I've heard (recent furnace and AC install) is they are having an extremely difficult time with inventory.

The supply chain crunch has really affected furnace and AC supply.
