It’s all relative, supply & demand.

If they were gouging they would be out of work.
In warmer climates TINA so they pay what it costs. My parents paid $40K for their dual AC. That's the going rate in California.

So remember you're competing against the thing that the USA uses 50% of their total energy usage on.

Don’t give everybody credit for providing a phone number for the wrong person. That’s all me, thank you. (I don’t have Gavin’s number)

We used W&J, zero issues. Install was clean and pricing was pretty competitive compared to others.

Tempstar is part of the Carrier group of companies. Really, a/c units are pretty simple and basically are all made from the same crap. The only brand I have any opinion of is Trane which I say avoid at all costs. They place an extraordinary amount of effort into proprietary parts which usually backfire in the long run.

Currently receiving some quotes as we speak. Looks like there is still a shortage of units and install is a couple months away.

w&j quoted 4700(-500 for rebate) for a 3 ton trane, seems like i should avoid as above.

    W&J offered $8100+ tax for 2 2.5ton Trane 13 Seer XR13
Gavin offered $8200 all in for 2 ton and 2.5 ton Tempstar 16 Seer Slimline

Based off previous threads, people seem to be happy with the Tempstars installed by Gavin

Still have a few more quotes coming

Any point in going with mini-splits? Or is it just more cost-effective to go with a central air system instead?

Minisplit only makes sense if they can't economically fit a central system on your current furnace. I unfortunately will have to go this route, or replace a perfectly functional furnace.

Edit: minisplits are also good if your 2nd story doesn't have it's own furnace, and you only want the bedrooms cooled

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Mini splits are significantly more efficient than a central air but for limited areas. So it really depends what you want. If you just want AC in the bedroom for sleeping then a mini split is significantly cheaper to install and much cheaper to run over the long term. But if you want a lot of rooms cooled then their cost goes up a lot trying to do a multi zone system. So as above, they’re good to cool part of the upper floor of a two storey.

Mini splits can typically be SEER 21-23. Central air are typically 13-16 SEER. Give or take.

I think I'm going to spring for central air this year as I cant survive another week of that heat wave last year hanging out in my boxers on a lawn chair in my basement (not developed/just bare concrete with nothing down there).

Question is, do you have to upgrade furnace for central air? House is built in 2000. Mid-efficiency Lennox.

    Anyone have recco's in Edmonton?

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

I received a quote from Gavin about a month back and hoping install is around May - that’s when he said the units should arrive.

No you don’t have to. I had it added to my 1980s era Lennox. Some places will highly recommend it and some might even say they won’t install an a/c on an older furnace (w&J said this to me) so you may have to shop around if you hear that.

Can I have his contact details?

I reached out to a couple different places and i was getting wildly ranging quotes. from $4000 (unknown brand) to $5500. (2300 sq ft home 1 zone requested)
