    Default Photobucket P500 Ransom

Has anyone else been affected by this BS stunt that Photobucket pulled? All images that are 3rd party hosted (aka any pictures you have on a forum) will no longer work until you pay their $400 (USD I presume) ransom fee. More info here:

    http://www.csoonline.com/article/320...om-demand.html

I've got pictures well over a decade old being hosted on multiple sites and forums through photobucket, to go and re-upload them to a different photo hosting site and then fix all the links would take an eternity. If the fee was a reasonable amount I'd even consider paying it but $400 is a joke for something many other websites are offering for free.

Just checked an old thread, my PB links seems to still be working just fine?

Yep, I've had hundreds of threads become zombies with no pictures. Its kind of crazy, makes you realize how easy it is for shit to get lost in this day and age!

I know I still have the pictures obviously, but to migrate them and change all the links, not happening.

Killramos, if the pictures are cached on your computer, you are probably just seeing those. If you clear your browser cache, I bet you'd get the "not available" picture.

Huh, fair enough. Guess I'm finding a new image hosting site. Their loss, been using them for years.

Private hosting is so cheap I don't know why people bother with PB. Not too surprising they did this IMO, but kind of a dick move because I don't think too many people expected it. Then again it was free so you can't really complain. Unfortunate if you had all your eggs in that basket I guess. If it's that important to you just pay the $400, if not them move on.

Cheap or not I'm not paying anyone to post photos on forums.

Well most people who have a service like that use it for a fail-safe/backup for all their photos, not just random forum posts.

I never post privately hosted photos unless they're my own, I just use the IMG tags and paste in the image location. I thought that's what most people did but maybe not.

Photobucket has become so terrible over the years. Slower than fuck, and spams the shit out of you with pop-ups if you don't have an ad-blocker on.

Totally a dick move but its a private company so they can do what they want. If you read the terms and conditions anyone who didn't have a second copy is a fool.

I've switched to imgur. Fast and easy to use. Not very good organizational tools however.

Yea, I used PB because it was free and super convenient for posting on forums back in the day on iDevices. It's gotten so slow, unusable, and UI made it difficult to use that I stopped using it a few years ago. When they did the "ransom" thing I checked and yup, most of my links broken on old posts. Not worth fixing it, I just deleted my account. Only had ~200 photos hosted through there.

I haven't used photobucket in a decade, shit sucks. Used imageshack for a couple years then started using imgur in like 2010.

    Same happened to me.

I know there are a bunch out there, but can anyone recommend a good image hosting site? Preferably free and easy to use in terms of 3rd party linking.

Thread of mine from 2012, hosted with imgur, images still work. Photobucket has always been shit.

yup this is super annoying, now I have to find somewhere else to host the small amount of photos I want to share.

So if imgur goes down the pay route, will they also be evil?

A very real question, where does a place like photobucket or imgur make their money?
    Will fuck off, again.

Advertising space. The problem is that they went overboard with it, and pop-ups galore. Which means less people use their service, which means less profit, so they put even MORE pop-ups and ads on. Which of course leads to even less people using them. Ad naseum
