Is 'hukou' a thing in Canada?

How a little brown book can keep China’s lovers worlds apart - Globe and Mail story.

Quite interesting and it leaves me wondering if 'hukou' is a thing outside of China in a country like Canada?
    Will fuck off, again.

    Well...

You could sort of say that Silicon Valley and New York are Tier 1 areas. Vancouver and Toronto could be considered Tier 1 cities as well. Now, you can't find love if you physically are not where the other person is.

Unless you go solely on internet forum ramblings and social media, which is a start.

The whole system in China is fucked if you ask me. People seem to marry for status and $$ first, and love...well it may not even ever be in the equation.

Read an article a while back and it was talking about this girl who was with her boyfriend for something like 5 years, they were going to marry, he bought an apartment and all that, but she broke up with him and went with a guy who also had an apartment, in the same building, but facing the river, a nicer view. Like that's fucked up. Because of gender unbalance the woman can pretty much do whatever she wants and there will always be 10 other guys to pick her up. All those people who spends years trying to get a boy and in instances killed their girls due to old one child policy, really missed out. If you were a parent in China with a girl, you pretty much hold all the cards in my opinion.

Also there was this....public rejection and humiliation because the ring was too small....fml, does anyone do anything for love anymore?

This is Bang on. This book doesn't mean so much cause Social status for Chinese people is top priority cause they always want to be better than others. If you were born in a lower class neighborhood but did well for yourself, have a fat wallet, nice house, drive a nice car..... then the potential in-laws will overlook the brown book cause it doesn't mean anything in this case. But go the other way when you have a rich family with a son who is a doctor and one day brings home a uneducated farm girl with a good personality, the girl would be kicked out of the house before she can even say hi and the parents would threaten to disown their child if he were to marry a piece of trash like that. Then son will listen to his rich parents cause he doesn't want to lose the inheritance and will end up marrying someone he doesn't love but has a better status than the farm girl. This happens EVERYWHERE, you don't need a book for it and Chinese are just more open about it than others. I've witnessed this first hand from the MIL who's been trying to find a wife for her lazy spoiled son who's been rejected many times already cause he doesn't have much money.

That is really interesting, I had no idea. It seems to me that would overall be a hindrance to the development of a country by potentially creating barriers for bright individuals to progress in a society.

Social status will always be a thing in any society. If I have to guess, it's more pronounce where the gap between the rich and the poor is big.

Perhaps it's somewhat of a joke, don't we have the map of Calgary too?

All societies have some method of identifying and enforcing social status. China is just more open and honest about it.

I have a buddy who married well above his social standing, and from some of the classier people I've met through that relationship I've learned two important things.
    1) it's best to only date people you meet at the Glencoe club and
    2) if you need a job, just start playing squash with the old guys at the Glencoe club, thats all the resume you need.

I get through those doors exactly once a year for a charity event where I know a sponsor, and I can say with certainty that it's not money that prevents me from fitting in there.

Sometimes in the heat of the moment, it's forgivable to go ATM.

I agree somewhat but I think in Canada at least it matters a lot less and the movement between classes (especially lower and middle) is a lot higher than somewhere like china.

The only people that seem to care about class in Canada are the top 1%. The rest of us could care less.

Yea I am not so sure I would be so quick to assume that a membership to Glencoe goes hand in hand with class

    Money maybe, but not class.

That video can't be real, can it? It feels staged to me

EDIT: Apparently it is real? Wow... shallow

EDIT 2: So the story is that they guy had agreed beforehand to buy a diamond at least 1 carat in size, and he basically stiffed her on it. You know, I can kind of side with her on it. If my wife told me she was going to buy me a BMW for retirement, and then she threw a surprise party and gave me a Kia... uh yeah, I'd be pissed.

My wife is actually from the same city as where this went down, she was very happy with my tiny ~3/4 carat solitaire diamond ring
One child policy = no girl.

Wife demand is high and supply is low. Cost is higher. And you thing the princess syndrome was bad in HK, it's now way worse in Shanghai and Beijing as they turn into tier 1 cities.

Of course, when you can't source internal, you go outside:
    http://siberiantimes.com/other/other...berian-brides/

And that's before the typical marry rich pressure from most old school parents. My cousin still got shit on all the time from MIL that her daughter could have married a doctor and not a lowly accountant.

22-year-old new TV star Seasun Tang who stirred social media chatter when she said, “If you have property, you have [sexual] climax.”

Call her material girl, but she is not alone in stating the obvious: a home is more reliable than a husband to a woman.
This is the mindset now in China/HK.

Hokou is probably fairly low rank cock block. If you made your million and billions, who cares if you are not suppose to be there.

The thing is like, you can easily get a 1 carat ring for cheap if you get one with crappier C-C-C. It's so easy to fool a girl if they only look at size.

Or you can go with the ring you purchased and be near flawless and shines like a mofo (0.69 carat for ~$7k). Now 1+ carat with near flawless features, you probably looking at over double that price.
