    ^^ nice.

One thing I've noticed after leaving O&G.. people claim to have "long days" of "hard work" have never really experienced what a long day really is

That goes for you O&G office types as well, but specifically field hands. Anything's a breeze after 45 day hitches, and working outside soaked in invert. Do not miss that shit, no sir.
    DOES ANYONE NEED A GO-JUICE?

Would take long days soak in invert (with the accompanying pay) over my first full time job... at a plumbing service company, soaked in shit

Normal week was 14-16hr... but if you were on call that week they’d try to get you done after 12hrs... cause chances were high that you’d have 4+ hr of service calls at some point in the night... usually starting around 3am... or halfway through a meal... and a good solid 10hr+ weekend calls... all for about $15/hr (this was 10yrs ago... so probably like $18/hr now)

I think that car related thing we talked about would be perfect for you! Even better if you did it in Kelowna. Partner with area 27 too
I’m starting to think so too haha. I’ve been putting together a business plan for the last couple of weeks so it may gain some traction!

I did this over the last year and a half or so.

Left my PO job in Edmonton after it became clear that I wasn't getting on with CPS or EPS, and no way I wanted to spend the rest of my life working at a school. So I took an LOA from my job, went to Victoria and did my commercial pilot's license. Learned how to fly seaplanes as well. Met a girl out there, too, and six months later, moved to Toronto to be with her. Spent my summer looking for work and got a sweet bush pilot job at the end of the year. Now I'm gearing up for my second summer in the bush, and as hard as it is being away from home all summer, it'll be worth it. We'll get to visit, and my company is pretty good about time off for stuff like weddings and shit that seems to take place in the summer. We're hoping to be back in Victoria by the end of the year.

The pay sucks, and the days are long, but it's hard to bitch about this:

And then hopefully it turns into this:

    Woot, more beyonders in Toronto!

Where are you flying out of right now?
I know a shitload of commercial pilots if you ever need some introductions.

Hey thought I'd put this here in case it can help anyone else. If you are looking for a way to transition to another industry (or just get a job) and aren't sure how to figure out where your skills might be most useful, there's a project to help you. Here's the description:
"Transferable Competencies for Oil and Gas Professionals

The project aims to assist individuals who have been affected by the downturn in the oil sector by providing them with another tool to help them find new work that uses their transferable skills and competencies.

Led by Canada West Foundation (CWF) this joint action research project brings together partners from the GoldMind Project, Jobickle, Vametric and Griffiths Sheppard Consulting."

I just finished the intro session, and it sounds like a very cool project. Basically it match up job openings at employers with job seekers that have relevant skills. Where it differs from other programs is that it strips out all the crap that people would normally use to unconsciously discriminate against a job seeker. Things like age, address, ethnic name etc isn't the first thing a company sees, it's actually the last. So by the time they have that information, they are already convinced that you are a good fit for them in terms of specific experience, technical and soft-skills.

There's a research component to it, and they are in the early stages, so there aren't a pile of jobs in the database yet, but they are adding more through the next couple of months.

You do need to attend a session to get involved I think. I found this through the Goldmind project newsletter, and I saw it on linkedin as well. If you are interested and you can't find it those ways, PM me and I can get you in touch with someone to sign you up. It's all free, so that's nice. Longer term I could see this being a great way to crack into other industries. It remains to be see if this has a huge short-term benefit, but I'm a dreamer, so I really like it.
Not worth the time. Could have been done online.

Will be interesting what comes out of it over the next few months. Seems to have good potential.

Anyone who wants to do it purely online, here's the link. https://globaltalentutility.com
Takes about two hours to do a decent job of filling it out, and the hierarchy doesn't always make sense.

Apparently everyone should be getting into technology sales.

I'm actually investigating a path into the tech sector that might make excellent use of my skills. Not sales though.

Whats the chance of getting into a project management job without PMP designation? asking not for me but for my own knowledge.

Depends on their degree and experience. I’ve had no trouble getting offered PM jobs without it.

And depending on the types of projects you are managing and your previous experience managing those.

Changing industries to manage projects without pmp, no chance.

My brother went premed based undergrad>inside sales>project coordinator (technician coordinating for day to day labour management) at the same company>O&G IT coordinator> shaw IT pc>back to O&G>then moved to PM for IT at same company. After the first PC job it was all contract work. Used one of those “pimp” services where they get a couple bucks or whatever of your hourly. Doesn’t even have enough hours for a PMP, and he just started this role last month. So current job market (4-5yrs of work experience total)

Degree, experience, and network. Network being more important than degree, and nearly as important as experience.

If the applicant doesn't have the network, and is applying online with all the other random schmucks, PMP will probably help... but they still probably have a slim chance because there will be a dozen applicants with a personal referral.

All that being said, I'm gonna get my PMP soon. Work will pay for it and I have the experience... can't hurt to have it.

Have you looked at some of the prep books? The material is sooooo dry.

Yup. But I have to "develop myself" throughout each year and it beats a lot of the other training I can do. Plus, there's the longshot that it actually makes me a little more marketable if I decide to switch jobs haha.
