Kitchen island plug under the island overhang?

Hi guys,

Redoing my kitchen right now and need to install a plug. Because I am doing a waterfall face on the sides, i have nowhere to put the plug. My one option is under the overhang, which is about 11". Reading online, some people say you can't put it if it's 12" or more, but I don't really know if there are any local Calgary codes regarding this. Anyone know?

I believe this stuff comes out of the Canadian Electrical Code.
See page 5. I don't think you're allowed when there's more than 150mm (6") overhang.

Suggestion to solve your problem, though I'm not sure if it'll meet code or create more problems. Outlet inside of a cabinet?

Read that over a few times, so confusing. I think I am getting the same vibe regarding the 6" stuff, but in the same sentence they are talking about 300mm (12"), but perhaps that means vertically, not really sure. The picture they used as an example definitely protrudes much more than 6".

I believe the 300mm means the distance to the countertop.

My home has the plugs in the waterfall edges as well. It doesn't bother me since it is white on white.

Maybe the kind that recess into the top of the countertop/island would work better for you? They have models that are approved for use in Canada in kitchen counter installations.

My plugs are in the waterfall sides. Easy to access location.

Thanks guys. I looked into the pop up ones as well, but since i have drawers below, I can't really put one of those in, and heard they don't pass code as they are not "permanent", aka, plugin.

For those who have plugs in the waterfall, did you guys do your own kitchen or someone else? I am just curious on how to place the plug. Reason I ask, is I am doing my own kitchen, but the quarts people will come out later to template. Do I just set the plug like normal, and then use very long screws later through the quarts hole, or does the metal box have to stick out the thickness of the quarts?

You can also have the area of the plate recessed in to provide a more "flush" look as well

Awesome, thanks for showing that to me. Looks like it's a normal plug, and then a box extension added for the thickness of the granite. Good to know!

Benyl, are you able to snap a picture of the back of that? Guessing the back is sticking out into the cabinet? Thanks!
