    Question "Colossal" sized lobsters

Superstore used to carry "colossal" sized lobsters - ones that are 3 lbs or more. They usually have them during the summer for the past few years, but I've yet to see one this year. Tried three different stores with no luck. Is the east coast having a lack of large lobsters or something?

Somewhat related, I was at the Keg recently and added a lobster tail to my dish - they gave me two because the kitchen said they were small this year.

I think it may just be the supply we are getting here in the west, as the new CETA deal increased European demand.

There was no shortage at local seafood shops, I have a bunch of 2.5lb+ waiting for me on the east coast for this weekend

Yah probably get more money else where. It's like going to BC and buying cherries. You never get the good ones unless you ask for export quality as they send all the best ones to China and such.

Funny you say that, we just got back from kelowna and visited a bunch of fruit stands and tbh not one place had fruit that looked amazing. We all love cherries and we ended up buying them from the Safeway or sav on on because all the stands didnt look fresh. On our last day we grabbed a 20 lb box of peaches for our friends and family and they werent the best looking either.

Yah you gotta go to Sun City Cherries and ask for the export quality. I think its $10/LB but you will never in your life have better cherries.

Much like most good grade of sushi goes to Japan, everything that's good are now being exported to China.

I always thought the best meat came from 1.5 lb lobsters

I don't know if 1.5 lb is the way to go, but I've had bigger lobsters and they're really difficult to eat, so I'm not a fan of colossal lobsters.

I've personally found any lobster under 2 pounds to have a lack of meat in the claws. The shell is thin and easy to crack, but there seems to be more water than anything inside. Anything over 4 lbs, and the shell becomes really tough to get into, but the meat is really plump and tasty. I got a 6-pounder last July from Superstore, and it was on sale at $10/lb. Totally worth it.

True, they have been a bit smaller this year.

But in the end, it's all about getting the female. Lobster roe ftw

A few of my foodie Instagram people usually do group buys on lobsters out of NFLD and get them flown in. Not sure on pricing though.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

I was going to mention this because my company buys them from out there as well, and it only costs me $10 per lobster. We ended up buying 8 of them, so that's a STEAL for $80. They're also a good size too, good amount of meat on one.
I made sure to get all 8 females, so it is good times for the next few days

How big are each lobster? And how do you store them for several days?

They're probably around 1.5 to 2 lb this year? They used to be bigger last year around 2 lb or so.

For the rest we couldn't finish immediately, we just cook em, and freeze them, while trying to keep them as air tight and insulated as possible.

Definitely beats buying the $20/lb "jumbo" lobsters from Superstore. Do you freeze the entire lobster? Not sure how I feel about eating thawed-out lobster in general, haha.
