On June 18-19, 2013, over 200 mm of rain fell over southern Alberta in less than two days, and the town of Canmore, in the mountains to the northwest of Calgary, saw 230 mm of rain in 36 hours. That much water added to southern Alberta's waterways, at such a pace, resulted in catastrophic flooding for many communities, including Calgary.

Over roughly three days, around 1000 mm of rain have fallen over Houston, TX. That's over triple the two-day amount of rainfall that sparked the Calgary floods, plus with an extra day at that same rainfall rate tacked on for good measure. The June 2013 floods were bad enough. With four to five times that amount of water coursing through southern Alberta's streams and rivers, it's hard to imagine just how bad it could have been.
Blows me away that in Houston the houses on any sort of elevation high are what people want. Calgary floods and people continue to buy and build down on the flood plain.....

Estimate of up to 500, 000 cars destroyed. Will greatly help vehicle manufacturers as well as used car prices for a couple years.

I'm loading up on American epcm stocks. Should be years of federal and state funded work plus private work.

Good friends of mine who relocated to the Houston area about a year ago now have about two feet of water on the main level of their home. They were never in danger but are now looking for an apartment while their home gets repaired.
    Will fuck off, again.

This may come across as insensitive but why are so many people being rescued? There was an evacuation order yet people decided not to leave?

In some cases, people lack the resources to leave. They don't have a car or physically unable to leave without assistance that they can't get. Other cases, they don't want to leave for fear of looters.

This, and probably a level of belief they might be able to wait it out/it won't be that bad. I was speaking to someone in Houston and this is the worst they've seen in the last 20 years.

Plus look at Calgary, how many people have started buying up homes in areas that flooded in 2013?

    Because people are stupid.

Yes, quite a few needing rescue can't help themselves (elderly and disabled), but there are many more that are just too plain dumb to recognize death is a lot worse than some possessions getting stolen or their property flooding.

Don't have cars? They have feet don't they? The state was closed down anyways, not like they had jobs to get to, take a bus out of town. You know, think and take care of yourself and your family

The elderly I understand, but a lot of the videos/pictures I've seen of people not leaving have the resources to leave or decided to leave but waited to long and had to be rescued anyways

There was no evacuation order. Learning from the last time where they realized evacuating 6.5mm people ends up being more of a problem.

HiTemp, I wish you would evacuate this forum. People didn't leave because, as mentioned, there wasn't an order to leave. This was an 800 year event. Plus, if you evacuated 500,000 people, where do you think they would go? You have to think that many of the people in shelters do not have a better option. No money for a hotel, or gas, or any family nearby. The guy across the street from me has 4 families living with them right now. And 6 pets. Use your head before making yourself look stupid again.
