If you want a good example of the power of values-based marketing Simon Sinek does a very good job of explaining it in this old video.
    .
If you liked that video you should read his book (start with why).. Really good read.

What diploma /certificate or certification has the highest employment success rate that isn't a "hands on" trade?
Well, you could always go the technologist route. Since you already did engineering, you can use that to not have to take some of the classes. It may mean a lower pay grade, it may not. You'd have to take 1 to 1.5 years of schooling. The field you pick should still be in demand by the time you get out, so in theory there would be plenty of jobs available.

Anyone with an eng degree could pick any technologist diploma and walk out with a 4.0 with ease. Look at all the technologist positions, find out which one is in high demand, lots of job postings, and go do it. That's why I did instrumentation, it was the "hot ticket" field back in 2008. Very pigeonhole'd though, would recommend electrical eng technologist as that is more applicable countrywide (or in the USA) and in a variety of industries versus being stuck in O&G.

I understand that it is a bit of a downgrade in stature (we've seen the threads and what anyone with a uni degree thinks of others without it) but everyone I know with tech diplomas are still working. And there is still relevant information related to the specific field of study that you wouldn't have previously attained depending on your specialization in eng, so its not like it will be worthless.

It just may be a way to diversify your skillset and "papers" with minimal work and in the shortest time possible, building on what you already have, and for the minimal hands-on work that there may be, it could give you a new appreciation (or a better idea) of what goes on in the field. That's the only reason I am suggesting it. You obviously are a very capable individual, but if a position is asking for a tech vs an engineer, there usually are certain caveats with the job (not necessarily lower pay, but certainly a lower ceiling) that make hiring an engineer not possible. A tech diploma could allow you to get access to jobs that are closed off by you being overqualified. Techs can stamp designs and drawings within their field after enough experience, so maybe it leads to you getting your foot in the door somewhere and then being able to utilize the eng degree later on to move up in the company?

Food for thought. You've probably already ran through this scenario, but I haven't seen it mentioned so figured I'd lay it out.

I'm not sure you'd want to get into the same career as your wife but... Bachelor of Applied GIS.

When I took it there were a few engineers looking for a career change.

A variety of jobs available: https://ca.indeed.com/jobs?q=GIS&l=Calgary%2C+AB.

Work a few years to get experience then start managing projects (like you like to do) if you excel at it.

Lots of jobs with engineering firms so that may help you transition to something else.

What about looking at the cannabis industry? Some of the management positions pay over $100K, and recent news articles tell me they're on a hiring spree. Only issue is you'd probably have to leave Calgary.

I don't disagree, but if you want 2 years of easy education for guranteed employement its definitely an option.

Somehow I don’t see being a fireman as being “hands off”

Mini Update: the world of job postings has certainly picked up, although job postings are sort of meaningless anyway.

Any company where I've tried to get junior BA roles has told me to fuck right off. Apparently they aren't interested in people with experience in other industries, they want fresh new grads. Or that's the feedback if I'm able to actually talk to anyone.

On a more positive note, I have been in discussions with my friends in the O&G service industry and there's some good opportunities there. However apparently my skillset doesn't translate well to the HR drones that look at resumes. I don't fit the mold for what they are imagining when they post jobs in sales or technical groups. Working the people who actually know me seems to have a better chance of success of at least getting to the decision makers.

And I never did post my final thoughts on that Higher Landing "career transformation" program. If anyone cares, PM me and I'll tell you about it.

I've been checking out online posting and job fairs (last week at Sait) as well. Can confirm, same kinda results, new grads online.

From what I have seen and found, the only way to transition is to start at the bottom. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it is difficult to swallow that pill...

Personally, I am trying to get into a small local business and start at the bottom. Small locals sound like there is opportunity for growth and some decent work environment. I just don't have any contacts or networks into the local businesses...

Good luck being allowed to start at the bottom. I've been told that route is closed to me at several companies.

How well can you spread absorbent material on ashphalt?
Just send in a Youtube video of you cleaning the garage floor as your resume.

My experience has been about the same as slow’s in that regard.

Out of work senior engineers will not be considered for entry level roles.

Can’t tell you why that is that is just the feedback I have heard.

The HR people and mangers I've talked to told me they would never under any circumstances consider an older person for a junior role regardless of motivation, experience or any other factor. Seems crazy to me.
