is there anything you can actually do to protect yourself?
Ive used equifax before and I'm scared shitless about this.
But at the same time, I'm not sure if there's anything I can do, that will actually be effective?

Not sure applies for Canadians but it could be an hassle if you need anything that requires a credit check.
If you don't want to go thru that motion, most home insurance policy should have ID theft coverage and just keep monitoring your credit report and make sure nobody took loans on your name. Hope that with so many data out there, chances that your info get picked would be like winning the lottery.
