    Default help with back issues

I am hoping someone will have ideas on how I can fix my back. On my MRI in last December I found out I have a slipped disc, scoliosis, and schmorl's nodes. I am not sure what has caused this but I have been visiting the chiropractor and massage to try and help. I have done physio which didn’t seem to do much. The chiro seems to help the most, but the pain does seem to come right back. Sitting in my desk at work is constantly painful no matter how I sit. We have standing desks as well, but standing still is just as painful. If I stand up and walk around it helps relieve tension, until I stop again. Sitting still it feels like someone is constantly pushing down on your head, and a pain of one of my ribs digging into something else. Swimming is probably the best relief I have found, but I can’t just be in a pool all day. I have an inversion table which also seems to take off some pressure. Hopefully someone else has some suggestions as now I have to wait for 12-18 months on a list , to see a “back specialist”. Not sure what this is going to do, since I’m already seeing a back specialist (chiro).

    look into this:

    http://www.atlasprofilax.ch/eng/

i had similar issues and that treatment wasnt a miracle fix... but it was basically what allowed other treatments to finally actually do something. before that chiro/physio/massage was a very temporary relief kind of thing, after it was like it actually was helping, even simple things like a foam roller felt better after.

its been just over a year now, and i was able to absolutely wreck myself wakeboarding this summer (multiple double eject crashes in a row) and be FINE the next day... before the treatment? out for 3-4 days, bed ridden

i saw Harreson Tanner, i actually drove all the way out there to see him, he is really good at adjustments too... but he also travels twice a year to alberta, and will be in calgary oct.27 and 28th

What is the cost of this if you don't mind? If it's something that has a good chance of helping out then I don't mind waiting til October end!

$300, but that also includes a follow up appointment, and then it's done, no more appointments needed. Lifetime adjustments on the atlas too if for some reason it pops back out

Was able to submit it to sunlife for full coverage too

How much do you weigh? And are you fit? Don't lie.

I'm now getting back to normal from a stage 4 disc extrusion measuring 1.6x1.1 cm about the size of a blueberry that grossly displaced my S1 root nerve and put a good deal of pressure on my thecal sac.

Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt deadlifts or any kind of workout routine right now.

What size is your disc prolapse? Is the annulus torn or just bulged? Very important to know. Doctors usually won't tell you either.

About 170 lbs, I'm in ok shape as far as going for long bike rides and such, just can't lift a ton of weight without hurting my back.
They never told me the size of it, I'll ask him when I go on wednesday to go over the 2nd MRI.

What does your MRI report say? A radiologist looks over the scans and gives their impression.

You should have a copy of this.

EDIT: Stop biking right away. I'm not a medical professional but even I can tell you that the position of the body is in flexion while biking putting further pressure on the bulge. You need neutral and extension postures.

Also read up on the Macenzie method for disc injuries. But like anything do it under guidance (usually physiotherapists).

When you say "back specialist", what do you mean by that? The orthopedic spine surgeon referral?

I've been through this process. Had a major herniation at L4/L5 which made life quite miserable as I couldn't walk, sit, stand or sleep without being in a lot of pain. Had a surgery and enjoying a good quality of life now. Played golf (but stopped as the risk wasn't worth the reward in my eyes), swimming, ride my bike, lift weights etc

Do some research on chiro's. I don't understand the science behind what they do. I'm very skeptical of it, but some people claim it works for them. For what it's worth, the multiple spine surgeons I met with cringed when I asked if seeing a chiro would help. They suggested I do some unbiased research before seeing one.

As mentioned, you should have an MRI report written by the radiologist. Ask your family doc to interpret the information while you wait for the spine consult.

Got a bit of an update and finally figured out what the "back specialist " is. He is a Physiatrist Dr. Tony Giantomaso. I have to wait til February for my first consultation, but at least I will finally get in.

Living day to day is rough enough, as I still can't even sit still in my chair at work without constant pain. Always have to adjust positions constantly to relieve some tension.

    Updates?

I had lower back problem on and off. Been to chiro and physio. Did some of the exercises prescribed but wasn't consistent. Had an inversion table that I use occasionally. Sold it this past Friday and on Saturday I did some squats and went to the park in the afternoon. While trying to pick up my 3 year old daughter i felt a sharp pain. Sunday and Monday was a write off. Went to Chiro on Monday and interestingly while I was there I didn't feel the pain. Tuesday I also took the day off.

Question. MRI. Can a family physician send you or would a physiotherapist usually do the prescription?

Family physician will have to fill out the requisition form for the MRI. At that point, you have 2 options: 1) Get on the waitlist and wait for 4-6 months through the public system. 2) pay out of pocket and have one done within 5 days via the private system. Cost is roughly $700 or so. Keep in mind, if your results come back abnormal and need a specialist, it could be another 4-6 month wait.......so paying out of pocket can knock off considerable amounts of wait time. Your injury would probably be low priority as you are quite functional, so I would expect to waiting on the longer side for both the MRI and the specialist appointment (assuming you actually need to see one).

UPDATE: made it through chinook season with 2-3 light headaches (use to be 3-4 per week... migraines!)

down almost 30lbs... feel stronger than ever and probably nearing a personal record for fitness. mostly due to finally being able to workout for the first time in a decade!

very rarely having any sort of flare ups of back pain and if i do i can roll it out on the foam and be fine the next day

I know this is a late reply but better then never.
I had a slipped disc in 2015 and tried everything from chiro to massage and nothing really helped. I started working with an athletic therapist at my work in early 2017 and he made me stop all other treatments and I was better within 3 months. How? I strengthened my deep core muscles, I fixed imbalances and created I created mobility routine for my issues. I have helped tons of people with different types of pain by doing basic movement assessments and getting to the root of the problem.

My opinion is stop seeing a chiro immediately. If you have tight muscles (psoas, QL, errectors) it will literally pull the adjustment back out of place within days. You can get all the adjustments you want but if you are tight it will do nothing long term.

Massage while great for recovery will do nothing in terms of movement quality or strength and costs a shit loads of money.

My guess is that you need to get your body to do super basic stuff again and strengthen your transverse abdominus.

The biggest lesson I learned in my recovery is
Flexibility = Your body can stretch out but you are prone to injuries and have no strength in those areas
Mobility = Your body is strong all ranges of motion

Flexion of the lumbar spine is literally the worst thing you can do in terms of your recovery so avoid it at all costs. Here is just a basic idea of areas you should focus on and what those tight muscles are doing to your back! The psoas one is how 99% of back injuries occur!
