Re-activate Alberta DL after being away for few years

I have a close family friend whose son is looking to move back to Calgary after being away for few years. For obvious reasons, his Alberta driver licence has expired for quite a while and he didn’t need to drive while he is working in Hong Kong.

My question is what would be the process for him to ‘re-activate’ his Alberta driving licence. Will he need to go thru a few hours of driving lessons before he is allow to apply for his DL?

If your driver’s licence expired more than 6 months ago, you’ll need to provide proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada (birth certificate, passport, etc.) as well as proof of your residency in Alberta (utility bill, residential lease agreement, etc.).

If it expired more than 3 years ago, you will need to pass the written and road tests before a new driver’s licence will be issued.
