Pretty hilarious that not only did the Alberta IT guys misjudge demand, they misjudged iOS vs Android usage fucking over iPhone users. They must've used the world distribution numbers between iOS vs Android, while in Alberta, it's 65.3% iOS and 34.7% Android. It takes an average of about 17 minutes for iPhones to receive alerts through the app, compared to roughly two minutes for the Android version. That's because the iPhone's deliver rate is about one-third slower than the Android's push rate, according to the province.
And the rate of uptake was.much greater than anticipated.
The Alberta Emergency Alert app was designed in 2014 with capacity for 50,000 users. Now they have 176,000 users, and of those, about 115,000 have the iPhone version. Usage of the app has grown by about 30 per cent this year..
On the radio they mentioned it's taking time to get new servers in place to handle the load. Time to embrace the cloud, one click to bring up servers to handle the load, one click to take it down to save money. Or automate the whole fucking thing, but that'll take the government another couple of years.
Interestingly enough, Beyond has similar iOS vs Android numbers. We're at 62.8% iOS and 37.2% Android. Windows Phone and Blackberry numbers are just depressing haha.
