Default Android better than Apple when it comes to Emergency Alerts in Alberta

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...-app-1.4298161

It takes an average of about 17 minutes for iPhones to receive alerts through the app, compared to roughly two minutes for the Android version. That's because the iPhone's deliver rate is about one-third slower than the Android's push rate, according to the province.

And the rate of uptake was.much greater than anticipated.

The Alberta Emergency Alert app was designed in 2014 with capacity for 50,000 users. Now they have 176,000 users, and of those, about 115,000 have the iPhone version. Usage of the app has grown by about 30 per cent this year..
Pretty hilarious that not only did the Alberta IT guys misjudge demand, they misjudged iOS vs Android usage fucking over iPhone users. They must've used the world distribution numbers between iOS vs Android, while in Alberta, it's 65.3% iOS and 34.7% Android.

On the radio they mentioned it's taking time to get new servers in place to handle the load. Time to embrace the cloud, one click to bring up servers to handle the load, one click to take it down to save money. Or automate the whole fucking thing, but that'll take the government another couple of years.

Interestingly enough, Beyond has similar iOS vs Android numbers. We're at 62.8% iOS and 37.2% Android. Windows Phone and Blackberry numbers are just depressing haha.

Percentage of IT infrastructure nerds who use Android is probably higher too....

Are you saying iOS has 62% market share in Alberta, while the rest of Canada is pretty close to the #'s reversed?

I just have 2 data points. This article, and Beyond usage data. From those data points, it's skewed more towards iOS in Alberta. Here's Beyond's breakdown by Mobile OS.

My Android phone (LG G6) has an FM radio too, which could come in handy in emergencies that jammed up the cell phone network.

I'm also one of those weirdos who has a AM/Shortwave receiver too haha.

I just don't trust the modern stuff in an actual emergency.

I might be counted in that 33. I was flipping back and forth between Android and Windows Mobile until about 6 months ago. When the Lumia 950 came out in 2015 I used it for about a solid year until some apps that I used daily dropped Windows Phone support. Too bad. I actually liked the OS.

Pretty much every android phone has the hardware for FM reception but that functionality is blocked by the carriers in USA and Canada.

Haha, another Windows Mobile guy here!

I got water in my mic on my Lumia 950XL which killed the mic (strap on my Microsoft Band 2 went too), went to a S8+ afterwards (with a Samsung Gear S3)...

I hate the camera on the S8+ though, I still bring my Lumia 950XL with me when hiking or going places where I want to take pictures...

I like and enjoy the S8+.

They're targeting to get the delivery time down the 5 minutes while, Facebook and twitter will get the alert out in 10 seconds. They might as well scrape the servers and change their app to monitor for #ABemerg on twitter

Looking at some of the sites in my network, over the past 1.44M mobile pageviews, iOS makes up 49.95% of mobile traffic (29.18% iPhone, 20.77% iPad). Looking at the past 3.1M pageviews (desktop and mobile), iOS makes up about 23.5% of all traffic. Android is 21.9%.

Super interesting considering Android has a higher market share.

Seeing as I oversee Cloud Operations at work, I have insights on the distribution of both mobile app usage as well as mobile web usage broken down by region. I assumed APAC would be more Android, but nope, they're even more iOS than NA. Really surprised by these numbers too.

    NA (App) - 58.9% iOS, 41.1% Android
    EMEA (App) - 57.3% iOS, 42.7% Android
    APAC (App) - 66.9% iOS, 33.1% Android

    NA (Web) - 64.6% iOS, 35.4% Android
    EMEA (Web) - 62.0% iOS, 38.0% Android
    APAC (Web) - 71.5% iOS, 28.4% Android

Comparing to actual sales numbers, it makes zero sense.
