    Default Catalan Referendum

    http://nationalpost.com/news/world/catalan-referendum

This is one of the craziest things I've heard lately. 15,000 police officers, tasked with stopping a VOTE (as in, writing on a slip of paper). It's absurd, I find it an affront to the very basics of democracy. Women, children, grandparents, anyone was apparently fair game for state sponsored police violence. Police cut down doors and broke glass to remove ballet boxes.

    Crazy!

Interesting to see where this goes. Especially from a economic point of view and Spains GDP.
With Brexit happening, I always felt the UK was subsidising Europe. With the UK leaving maybe this was a good time for them hold a referendum too?

So this portion of the Spain is the equivalent of Alberta to Canada, I wonder if the same would occur here if this happened

Yep. And additionally, the Spanish government apparently took away the legislation allowing for this vote to happen, as they know it would pass it sounds like.

So imagine the Canadian federal government dealing with the Quebec separatist movement this way. Putting laws on the book to allow it to happen, then rescinding those laws right before the referendum was done back in 1995. Pretty sure Quebec would have erupted in civil war against the feds at that point.

Voting took place on October 30, 1995, and featured the largest voter turnout in Quebec's history (93.52%). The "No" option carried by 54,288 votes (50.58%).
I think this sparks so much anger because it comes down to autonomy of a person and the collective group they believe they are apart of. Threat of violence against non-violent actions is a pretty quick way to descend into civil war, hence why the states in the USA are allowed to have armed militias.

It would be like a bunch of natives all living in one area declaring independence from the USA, like say Guam deciding to leave the USA. The USA would never let Guam vote for independence without beating them down either, that would be a massive loss of potential tax revenue - nevermind the other perks.

In this case though, I think they just believe they are better off without the overbearing all encompassing "Euro", which is really the largest attempt at a United States of Europe.
