Everyone thinks it’s a good idea until they get the bill and are the ones paying the extra fee. You think the NDP gives a shit if a business charges more? Nope because the people they are buying votes from are the minimum wage servers who are ecstatic to get the raise.

I really like Minas, but it never seemed to be busy enough to make the numbers go around. This publicity stunt might backfire and kill them unfortunately.

Ye man. In anticipation I have already sold all my cars, fired a ft and a pt and putting in extra hours myself.
Didn't you recently make a "How to I buy a Ferrari thread?"

I dunno, I don't think the poor people commenting against them on CBC goes out to eat in the first place.

We can hope. Their lunch rodizo is hella good value and nothing beats a Caipirinha in the middle of the day.

The fee is actually optional. It really is a publicity stunt to increase awareness against the NDP. Wish it would catch on with other companies.
If we follow Seattle, then these workers will see hours cut and end up making less at the end of the month. Then the NDP's vote buying attempt will fail.

Isn't there another place in Calgary doing this as well? I remember a thread about it not too long ago

4% increase doesn't equate to the raise in minimum wage though... you don't pay a server more because of a larger bill

No but it was mentioned they tried to bring awareness to a number of rising costs, property tax, business taxes, liquor and food costs from suppliers, etc.

interesting idea. Actually wouldn't affect my decision to dine at a restaurant. $4 on a $100 bill? Meh. If it's good food I'll support them.

You can just raise the price or put in a fee to make a political statement. Restaurant had been raising prices when food cost went up. But when it's taxes and min wage, they slap in a surcharge. Everything is a cost to business, you just want to stick it to the government and make a statement.

I have seen some places added surcharge in California to protest incoming minimum wage ($10 now, $15 by 2022). But I have seen tons of fast food joints hiring with $14-16/hr now are unfilled. So I guess the market already decided what the min wage is.

Would it not have been better if they got together with their local business association or whatever it is and all members introduce a optional NDP Business surcharge when billing customers? Surely that would have been more effective political/marketing statement..?

I think that would not be good for all businesses. There are ones with higher margins that can definitely survive all these new costs and rather stay out of politics.
