My son is asking for a gaming keyboard as an Xmas gift this year.
Do they rally make a difference when gaming.
I know the crappy 15 dollar versions are ok for typing and stuff but does a $170.00 keyboard work better ?

Yes quality computer peripherals like mechanical keyboards make a difference. They are usually more comfortable for gaming sessions and will perform better for games that require many hotkey combinations to be used in quick succession.
I would avoid buying in most stores like best buy. You can probably find a good quality one online on amazon or one of the popular computer hardware stores. Different models frequently go on sale. Black Friday/cyber Monday is a good time to buy.
Definitely faster to type and more comfortable. Some you can do macros for key combos to use in games. I have a simple one at the office and just a backlit one at home so they weren't too pricey. Only thing to take into account is the different switch types (Cherry being the most popular brand of switch) with some being noisy vs quiet and a different amount of force required to depress the key. Just watch out for razer ones which I have heard tend to be flakey. Memory express has a decent collection along with newegg/amazon etc.
Yes. I love my mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switch which is designed specifically for gaming (I play CS:GO). All comes down though to preference, they are all keyboards. Of course, let's say specific keyboards to play RPG games, there will more keys that you could bind/macro in. Also, it's about how you feel while typing on the keyboard that makes the difference of which you want to buy. There are Cherry switches that are more "silent" now when pressing. I love hearing my keyboard though when I type lol. I would base it on what kind of game your son plays and go from there.

r/mechanicalkeyboards. It's a good time for your wallet.
i have the corsair strafe rgb mx silent http://www.corsair.com/en-eu/strafe-...y-mx-silent-eu
the rgb lighting is a gimick but cool, and the keyboard is solid with good feeling keys.
not too much noise either, definitely quieter than the non quiet switches.
honestly though, i type way more accurate and faster on my laptop keyboard. im pretty sure ita becauae i got used to pressing the keys so lightly that when i use my gaming keyboard at home i just dont press them down enough.
i would love to get a cheap mechanical for work too.
This is the one he's interested in.

Blows me away that they'd even sell a keyboard without a num-pad. lol

I’ve got this keyboard too. It’s awesomeThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
you can still buy the older g710+ for cheaper. I have it and love it. I wouldn't buy a keyboard without a number pad, but i have lots of desk real-estate so the space isn't an issue. the 710 is fairly quite too. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

You get used to it, mine doesn't have it either. Some keyboards don't even have a number row lol. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Reduces area taken by the keyboard as you don't use the num-pad for gaming and more ergonomic as it brings the mouse closer to the centre of your body. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I'm still using a G710+ as well and I love it. I'm so accustomed to my numpad I can't live without. I do know a few gamer friends who are totally content without a numpad. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
i'd stick to keyboards with cherry switches...the corsairs are pretty solid
wh...?
I probably got a defected keyboard but my Vengeance K90 broke on me in a year. It's been a while so I don't remember the exact reason, replaced it with the G710+ and no problems since. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
i've been eyeing this one: https://www.staples.ca/en/abc/produc...6_1-CA_1_20001
its romer switches not cherry switches; i am new to this as well so i don't really know the difference.
A Beyonder actually owns a company/and makes mechanical key boards. Suprised he hasnt chimed in yet. dakine i think was his username. He was the one with the stolen truck that ended up at Pick N Pull

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.
