    Default Star Trek Discovery

I'm a Trek fan, but after about 20 minutes into the pilot, I was, "What the fuck is this?" I gave up halfway through the second episode, as this series isn't Trek (just like the last Trek movie).

Anyone else give up on it or still watching?

I lasted about 5 minutes, probably less and switched to something else.
    Will fuck off, again.

    I’m watching it. It’s okay I guess.

We’ll see how it goes, it’s way to left for me though.

Orville seems to hit more real life issues, but isn’t sci-fi enough for me.

    Lol.

I've been thinking about watching The Orville. Looks like it's worth a shot.

Anyway, for other Trek fans who haven't yet seen Discovery, just be clear that this series isn't Trek. It's shoot 'em up space junk.

I'm enjoying it, you are correct though, it's not Star Trek. Just uses the name to try and get more viewership.

Orville is way less slap sticky than I thought it would be coming from MacFarlane.. It's surprisingly more like Star Trek than the other show.

Agreed. Orville is TNG with a few family guys jokes thrown in and Orville is renewed for season 2. Loved the Orville but the rating it got doesn't seem to justify the budget. At least it's renewed for Season 2, just not sure how many episodes.

I still watch Discovery. It's getting better as Bryan Fuller episodes are now done but it's definitely not Trek. It's a bit of retread of Enterprise but huge CGI budget. Now it will be cool if the fan theory that Discovery is actually a mirrored universe is true. They just want this Trek to be GoT for CBS.

I'm feeling the same way. I'll watch Discovery all the way through, but there are some big problems with it. The whole mushroom drive thing needs to go away. This has never been mentioned in any other part of the canon that I'm aware of and seems like a massive continuity problem. I don't mind the acting; the directing seems ok, but the plot is not gripping. The characters are reasonably interesting, but they're working with some pretty bad story material. In this serialized style of TV shows now, they're stuck with this plot for the rest of the season instead of having a reset every episode. I wish the writers had had the courage to not make it a wartime series and stick to what Trek is supposed to be about.

I was prepared to hate the Orville, but it's actually giving me more of the Sci-Fi fix than I expected. If Seth MacFarlane can ditch the 21st century referential humor and let the writers just find the funny in what life on a starship would actually be like, it would be better. Every once and a while they hit it like the practical joke of amputating a leg when growing a new leg is just a pain in the butt instead of life long disability.

So what's up with the visuals that seem to want to annoy you? Examples:

    - Lens flaring and other inexplicable flashes of light.
    - Constantly changing camera angles.
    - So much movement, you don't really know what the bridge (and other objects) look like.

When all that is interjected into deliberately dark lighting, then nevermind the actors and plot, as just visually, I found it painful to watch.

I'm not too hung up on it being out of sync with the other series. It's a fun show and I'm enjoying it.

I grew up watching TNG (and later all the other series that followed) and still prefer episodes centered around moral / social issues (eg. TNG The Drumhead).

Discovery is more about action and story arcs so I'm enjoying it as a sci fi series with a Star Trek flavour. It really is trying to appeal to a new generation of trek fans (especially the ones who like the movies since the reboot).

Yea its definitely meant for the millennials..... not our generation.

Its the same thing as when Transformers came out in 2007; I was shocked at how bad it was .... but then I realized who the target audience was. Even the 1986 TF Movie/cartoon had better characters and writing and it would have appealed to adults back then to some degree.

Since reading some comments, I decided to watch the 3rd episode and ended up pulling the plug about 3/4 of the way through. I could stands no more

The show is like watching a sci-fi video game instead of a sci-fi tv series.

    Going to check out Orville.

Watched the first 3 episodes of Discovery. BAD. Horrible show. Targeted audience is left wing millennials. Probably the worst show ive ever seen. Would be nice if they kept politics out of the show.

I've been watching it. I quite like it. ST shows often take a while to get their legs under them. The recent time travel one with Mudd was about as old-school Star Trek as you can get.

I'm watching Discovery, really enjoy it. Definitely not the traditional trek, but I think this one is focused on the start of section 31, the federations black ops unit that operates outside of the normal federation guidelines. Explains why the outfits are black and the type of tech they have. Traditional trek doesn't have this type of technology. Really interested to see where the story goes.

    You guys are fucked.

I've seen every episode of every Trek. Discovery departs a bit but is totally on point with what Trek would be in 2017. Lots of fun and is enjoyable to watch. WTF time travel ALREADY though. Goddammit.

Section 31 was in Enterprise, but I agree they play a roll in Discovery.
