How much is fair these days?
My niece is going to start baby sitting and since NDP raised the min wage to $15, what’s fair?
I’m somewhere in the $7/hr area.
Thoughts?

How many kids? How shitty are they?
For two kids, and about 4 hours, plan to pay your babysitter around $30-$40
...
$7/hr? Damn, I was making $5/hr babysitting in 1997.
man, i was happy to make $10-15 a night when I was doing it. Last babysitter I hired, was $10/hour about 6 years ago...no idea what the rate is now.

Most of our friends pay between $10-15 / hour

We used to pay $50-$60 for a night and our sitter would do the dishes/tidy the kitchen. That would be for about 4-5 hours. I would provide cab money if we drinking and couldn't give her a ride.
Thanks for the answers.
Does age of the babysitter change the rate?
13 years old vs 16?

Yeah I’m not sure, $10 is a nice round number mind you. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

If the babysitter has taken the course (yes there is one, and it’s actually quite informative) that should demand a bit of a premium over some family friend I’d think. They teach you things like first aid, first aid for infants, how to deal with misbehaviour, etc.

Wage for some tween down the street is a lot less than a responsible teen or adult with thier own transportation.
Kid down the street, ten bucks maybe? Hugh school or college person, $15?

Going rate in my neighgbourhood is $10/hr
Machining, Fabricating, Welding etc.
We pay $10 an hour as well, for a 16 year old with the babysitting course, and St.Johns infant cpr class.
Man I had these neighbors when I was young that would only pay me $3/hr. They had 3 kids, one with adhd and one with a tendency to hide for hours. Sometimes I’d show up and they’d have friends over. My parents tried to convince me to say no but I was too nice and got suckered in every time.
I’d say 7-10 is fair unless they’re older/ a student
Hey @Gestalt what do you charge?
I pay $15
The babysitters we attract with a $15 wage vs lower is night and day. We get high school students that are responsible and happy to be doing it versus those that I know watch the clock constantly and sit on their phone the entire time they are here (my daughter tells me the next day). Normally we have a baby sitter for 3 hours so the extra $15 is well worth knowing that my daughter actually enjoyed it and nothing got lifted from my house.

My daughter 17 and charges $10/hr. She is really well liked and engages with the kids, and not just plunking them down in front of the TV. She is constantly getting referrals from the parents to other parents and all the kids ask for her. She could probably ask for more but she likes it and isn't greedy. Hell the kid usually has more walking around cash than I do! Lol

How can you guys justify paying less than minimum wage for a babysitter who is of working age? Also I imagine the quality of the care is (usually) better. I would think the sporadic nature of the job (and at times when they would probably rather be doing something else on evenings/weekends) would also warrant a decent wage.
15 years ago I would get paid $10/hr to babysit neighborhood kids, I'd think it's more now.

B) I'm paying 1 hour of actual active babysitting, and paying 3-5 hours of sitting there watching TV, reading, or staring at their phone.
$7 is way too low. I would say $12-$15 is reasonable. Get your kids to secretly tell them that there are nanny cams all around the house. Or if you don't have real ones, buy some fake cameras and put them in obvious visible spots around the house
To your second point, how is that different than any other job where nobody ever works 100% of their capacity 100% of the time, and simply being at work nets you the same pay as the times when you're working your ass off? People are paid to be where you want them to be instead of where they want to be (I'm sure on a Sat. night they would rather be out with their friends or something). Not trying to be argumentative, I just feel like every job is like that. I see it as paying them to be there in case something happens, rather than more of a piece meal for how much they actually do when the kids are awake. I realize this is not a direct comparison but for example's sake, pilots aren't just paid to take off and land - they are paid to be there and able to act if something goes sideways during the rest of the flight even though they sit there bored out of their mind 99% of the time. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member.
