Just saw that Spotify has their 3 months for 99 cents deal up again for new accounts
FYI,
Spotify Premium subscribers are eligible for a free Google Home Mini while supplies last:

sweet, thanks for the heads up. got mine "reserved". i'm already invested in the Alexa ecosystem vs Google so will probably put this up for trade for an Echo. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Has anyone compared Apple Music to Spotify? Is the preference due to ecosystem, or is there something that makes Apple Music better?
I was looking at Spotify the other day and Spotify had some glaring omissions from what I am used to - no cloud support and 10,000 song limit (though the limit is probably fine for most people). Spotify also does not have a desktop client to my knowledge, and you can only use offline playback across a small number of devices. I considered all 3 and for me, Google Play Music ended up being the best platform. When I last looked into it, Apple Music was only 256kbps which is weak (all others are 320kbps) and had no web player. What I really like about GPM is the algorithms for making similar playlists based on song preferences, they are absolutely spot on and that is how I discover 99% of my new music these day now that I never listen to the radio. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. The nice thing about all 3 services is they all work pretty well on any platform, so you can pick whatever works best for your personal usage or cancel & switch if one of them isn't doing it for you. Apple Music is obviously the best integrated into the Apple Eco system but for most things they are pretty similar regardless of what device you're using it on.

iTunes Match is part of Apple Music sub. Anything not on Apple Music that I own, I can upload, and be available anywhere I have Apple Music. Fucking seamless. That was my decider. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Spotify was better for music discovery, but Apple Music seems to be catching up to where Spotify was when I first used it. Maybe my tastes have become more generic. I've been listening to the always updated new music curated playlists for my discovery, and Spotify seems to have stuff I like better. Apple's curated list seems to be mostly modelled after billboard charts.

Not sure why though, I had used iTunes on the desktop until I switched to AirPods and just use my phone.

What I read said that it can only be used for download/upload, not for playing your cloud library. If that isn't the case then I read some bad info. This is the chart I was looking at if memory serves me:This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Apple Music is a fantastic service. I listen to so much more music since getting it.
Anything you want it’s just there and seamless.
I don’t know anyone that actually pays for Spotify. I think that is a typical statement of their user base.

Yea, I had Spotify premium for a bit, but it was free. Think I got a code off someone from their cell phone plan or something.

Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play Music are all extremely similar. The main differences are in sound quality, the automatic playlist generator algorithms, specific integration applications, etc. If you just want a gigantic music library and easy access to pretty much every song for $10/mo, they all have you covered. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Probably depends on the demographic. Nearly all my friends use spotify and very few have apple music or others.
Spotify is pretty great at always having new EDM releases. Not sure how that compares to the others; I had apple music for a free trial but wasn't a fan so went back.
Lots of edm festivals / events release playlists around the artists that are playing and they are almost always on spotify so maybe thats why its more common for our age group

I'm cheap and not picky with music nor an audiophile so I voted other (Amazon Prime ftw)
If I want variety then I use TuneIn Radio to listen to live radio stations.
Although it sucks that Amazon Prime music selection can be limited unless you pay extra
I tried both and decided on Spotify premium. Biggest differentiator was the "built for you" playlists... i found spotify created better playlists.
also integration with Alexa is really good, especially for when i want to play some music for my kid. Just create the playlist one time and any time we want to play it just say 'alexa play eli's playlist' and she goes.
