Default Gone for almost a month but my util bill is higher...

I was away Sept 28 to Oct 20 but my water, and wastewater and drainage charges are higher for the most recent bill.

I don't see how I can be using so much water from Oct 20-27. And I live alone

Something has started leaking, I’d start with checking the toilets

Do any of your toilets leak? You often can't hear it, but what you can hear is the tanks kicking in to refill themselves after a few hours of slow draining.

+1 for leaky toilet. I had to replace the seals in all 3 of mine when I bought my place.

Your toilet leaks more than the Keystone pipeline.

Maybe your neighbor hooked their hose up to your house for some reason. Free water, eh.

Despite what everyone says here, I've been told that the City\Enmax estimates your bills on some months, this was directly from them

I have a direct example from my last townhouse, during one summer I didn't have my furnace run once, I had actually turned it off, as well since my hot water heater was electric there was almost 0 gas usage (except pilot on the furnace) yet I was still billed for a month that was similar to the spring. I contacted them and was told the above, sometimes they guesstimate based off past usage..

it would be worth while to check what everyone else has said but to also call and ask wtf

This, we've had some pretty wonky utility bills from Enmax is the last 6 months (gas and electricity), 2 of the last 6 months we had credits because the city was over estimating on electricity - the reason this happens is our electricity meter is inside a room at the rear of our home and sometimes we have the blinds closed which means the meter reader can not read the meter. Not sure why Enmax would make their estimates so high - based upon our past usage maybe when we had way more people living in our home, we've gone from 6-7 adults to 3 in the past 18 months.
    Will fuck off, again.

Water meters should all be remotely read by now though, no?

Try to find and investigate where you could a have leak. Take a look at this check list:
    http://www.calgary.ca/_layouts/cocis...edirect=1&sf=1

Then call Enmax and they will adjust your bill to your average consumption.
    From Enmax's website:
"If a customer receives a water bill equal to or greater than three times their average, monthly use for that season, they should call The City’s billing service provider, ENMAX, as soon as possible. Once the issue is determined and fixed, the bill will be reduced to reflect the customer’s seasonal average water use, plus the basic services charges for water, wastewater and drainage. This reduction will occur for up to two billing cycles (approximately 60 days), providing sufficient time to identify and repair the issue."

Glad I saw this thread because it was happening to me as well. I just thought we were just using water more often (longer showers, more flushes etc.), but I couldn't recall doing so that it adds $20-25 to my water bill. I looked into a leaky toilet and I tried this method:

    http://www.conserveh2o.org/water-lost-toilet-leaks

Put 10 drops of food coloring into all the tanks of my toilets and 1 of 3 are leaking, as the one that's leaking shows colored water in the bowl.
So I DO have a leaky toilet. However, is this enough to add $XX to my water/waste water usage?

both are estimated reads based on the time of year and previous usage, unless you have some wild and crazy OCD that made sure you used EXACTLY 10.000m3 and 19.000m3 both months. When a meter reader comes around they will take an actual reading, and retroactively adjust you bill.

Leaky toilette, or they could be calculating usage by average/estimation... In a while when they do an actual reading it should level out if it's not a leak.

My bill shows if they got an actual reading from the meter, or if they estimated it, and it's always indicated in full cubic meters -- never partial:

Yeah that's the thing about BC. They tax you to death but your utility bill is so much lower so it sorta evens out.
