Default re-exporting American car back into the US

I imported my V-wagon from the states, as there was no supply in Canada and the dollar was in good shape.

I'm now thinking of an upgrade (thanks @JordanLotoski ). I haven't sorted through the Canadian market for V-wagons, but the US market is very healthy. I could sell it for little loss after 5 years of ownership. Since it's an original American car, I'm not sure how easy it is to reverse the export/import process. Is it easier than exporting an original Canadian car?

It’s super easy. Just call the manufacturer and have them confirm it can cross the boarder. Typical basic inspection is needed (nothing above and beyond) and in most states it requires a police check to ensure the vehicle was not stolen and imported back to US.

I did this earlier in the year and was easy. The manufacturer had some trouble at first as they said I can just bring it back without a letter from them but eventually sent me one.

Did you get stuck with the 30 day hold at the border they started?

How did you handle the title issue?

It only sat at the boarder for about 5 days. I got it re-titled down here in the state I’m working with a safety inspection, the police sign off and valid insurance. Getting a title costed around $125 or something? Don’t remember the exact cost.

The 30 day hold should only be for dealers/wholesalers.

I have two options I guess: find a buyer and export it to them and let them handle the transportation etc.

    OR

I could handle the export to our place in Arizona, and then store it there while I try to sell it.
@Twin_Cam_Turbo - what do you recommend? I know you are a professoinal at this.

It will always be easier to let the buyer take care of as much import/paperwork/costs/transportation but you’ll probably get more money if you just get it to your place in Arizona legally and ready to sell.

Just a heads up for modified cars going to the USA. The EPA document states the vehicle must be stock - unmodified - and the penalty for lying is a $250k fine or 5 years in jail

The only mod is an Airraid airbox.

    I wonder if that counts?

I’ve sent lots of trucks with a simple intake or catback exhaust and never had any issues.

I just got the sweats - this is why I couldn't import my Mustang into the US. Was terrified of driving it across and claiming it was a stock, 1989 mustang.

    bump.

I just want to be clear. If the car was an original US car, and I export it back to the US, do the Americans care that it was out of the country? Other than the emissions stuff mentioned above, I wonder if you can simply get a new title the usual way and be on your way.

update: because I'm selling the car, it is not a regular "import", but rather a "commercial transaction" that essentially requires a broker.

    Any recommendations?
