    Default Flying with lobsters?

Been meaning to get a screenshot of this for the longest time. Finally remembered on the latest AC Air Canada flight.

Boardcasted In AC’s preflight safety briefings, shows this dude flying with a box of (what appears to be) tasty lobsters.

Can that be done? Anyone tried maybe coming back from Newfoundland? PEI, Nova Scotia?

Think of the smell and dripping that’ll ooze outta that box. I guess could be worse, guarantee someone’s already tried flying with Durian after a visit from the old country. (I love Durian tho)

Used to see it all the time, not sure if it's still allowed, but I imagine it is.

The little box you see in the video is (was) sold at the Halifax airport. Was pretty common when getting on a flight in Halifax to see people carrying them on. The lobsters are packed in ice packs so it keeps down any smell/ ooze.

Not sure if this is still a thing or not, as haven't been there in awhile.

We've always used a cooler and check it.

I think a lot of beyond takes crabs with them everywhere.

Lobsters are allowed as carry on. I bring back a bunch whenever I’m out east. We are exempt from the liquids and gels restriction when travelling in uniform, so I’ve had them use ice packs instead of the frozen peas to keep them cold, and couldn’t smell a thing. I swear it’s the peas that stink once they thaw out.

Those boxes are designed for carry on flights and doesn’t stink. The reason for that is people checking them in, they get jacked all the time so they don’t suggest checking them in. Lobsters are serious business.

You can buy them right in the Halifax airport, definitely. Still allowed.

Not sure it’s really worth it. Always seemed kind of cruel to put a live lobster through those x ray machines.

Are you allowed to take food through security, for instance I was at a maker market thing the other day and some guy from edmonton was selling Australian/NZ meat pies - frozen. Anyway I was chatting to another vendor (another kiwi) and she told me she would love some but didnt know if she could take a box back to Vancouver. Im pretty sure this would be ok right?

Good luck. It’ll pretty much be at the discretion of the security officer you deal with. CATSA is comprised of minimum wage teenage kids and retired old people. If the travelling public had any idea the level of ineptitude rampant at CATSA, they likely wouldn’t fly anymore.

I’ve brought a suitcase full of White Castle through US security as carryon. Had to declare meat at customs tho haha.

After a fishing trip I checked the fish-box without issue... not sure why you would want to carry it on.

CATSA thinks they are shit hot and above the law:

CATSA has been implicated by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada for collecting non-aviation security information from the traveling public. For e.g. a domestic traveler with large sums of cash (not illegal) has in the past, been reported by CATSA to the local police force. CATSA also violates their own protocol by allowing employees to bring mobile phones and the use of CCTVs in the full body scan rooms. Of the 10,400 reported incidents in CATSA's databases at the time of the audit, more than half had nothing to do with aviation security.
