I’m not going to lie when I say I would rather have a RV vs a tent.

We park our unit in a park in Scotch Creek where it’s basically a paved RV Park. We keep it there because of family and amenities. ( pool, hot tub, tennis courts, get togethers, beach and a dock )

When I want to leave Calgary and relax, that is where I go - I don’t want to have to pack my unit up and drag it to a campground every weekend when I could jump in the convertible, drive a leisurely 5 hours with the top down through the mountains and arrive to an already setup unit with a drink chilling in the fridge.

Each to their own I guess =D

Lots of outdoorsy families in Canmore etc would argue that smaller kids aren't holding them back from doing what they want, where they want. Just depends on who you are as a parent and there is not right or wrong.

I saw two kids with their parents who hiked out to Assiniboine last year. Those kids were probably 6? Not infants, but I've seen Mom's with those off-road strollers on hikes, maybe not West Coast Trail or whatever but still damn imptrssove LOL

I'm not a parent yet so admittedly armchairing. Been in the mountains a lot and little ones are definitely out there and I love seeing it.

Ya, Ive been on 12km snowshoeing trips with an infant and 3 year old. My son, the oldest will do 5-6km unassisted on moderate level trails and even some scrambles. I have been watching for a small hardwall trailer for weeklong trips as I am in my 40s and done with tenting now.

Meh, I get it... I was die hard tenter once upon a time.

But setting up 2 tents, getting fire going, dinner cooking, tarp over the picnic table so there's refuge for the afternoon shower or worse. Isn't fun, then there's the issue of wildlife where I like to go; dogs are great but when you keep finding cougar and bear tracks through camp - you want something more than ripstop fabric between your family and the teeth.

I loved that little 9'6" slide in camper I had, place to sleep, place to cook if it's really bad out, and the womenfolk don't complain nearly as much of there's at least an outside shower to clean up with. The 20' 5th wheel was a bit more spacious - and lower profile so less vents to replace when we arrive at a back county spot.

Oh yeah and no more 2am daddy I need to go potty wake-up calls to escort them to the outhouses

I want an RV next, it'll be an ancient pace arrow or the likes. At least then I can tow a toy behind when the time comes. Setup/teardown is stupid simple, 20min to beer o'clock

I went tent camping for decades and finally got tired of waking up cold, starting the fire/campstove to make coffee or breakfast, walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night, etc.

i hated having to pack my vehicle with stuff, worrying that i'm forgetting something, bringing enough coolers and ice for food and drinks, etc. now, i just walk out my back door, load up my trailer during the week whenever i have time (i'm one of the lucky few that can store their trailer at home) and by the time i get to my site, my drinks are cold, my food is still cold, and my kids can just go play. my wife and i can set up in less than 30 minutes and packing up is always a chore whether you're tenting or glamping.

because of having a trailer, both of my kids have been camping their whole lives. my daughters first trip was when she was 3 months old. my son was a little bit older because he was born in late fall but they both love going camping.

there are always people that say "you're not camping, you're glamping. real camping is in a tent with no amenities." to that i say i don't give a shit about your opinion. my family likes it, and i do it for them, not for your acceptance.

To me using a trailer or RV is not glamping its growing up and enjoying the outdoors. Don't care who you are sleeping in a tent when your 40 sucks no matter what.

Glamping is a stupid hipster thing and is getting crossed with other activities.

I agree with this. To me it is about quality family time. And I find that with camping (glamping) it really is quality time. Really one of the most stress free ways to go imo. I do like the idea of a stationary lot that has been mentioned a few times here, but for now, I still like trying different places and exploring. I do expect that one day I will end up with a lot, but I am not ready to commit yet.

Also, 3 years ago I went from a 30' trailer to a 24' one and I am way happier with it. Easier to tow, park, get gas, store, etc. Plus cheaper to buy. I mostly have it for comfortable beds, kitchen, washroom. Everything else in an RV is extra.

I do hate how busy and expensive so many camp sites are getting though. New campgrounds definitely haven't kept up with the new RV sales and demand. Places just get more expensive and harder to get in. Maybe I should start a campground...

I'm in the market for a small used tent trailer.

I to grew up and have tented for the past 20 years. I am tired of the tent life and the tent trailer provides enough creature comforts for me and the wife.

Plus I need a smaller trailer to get into the area's we like to camp (Back country, Crown Land)

Tent trailers are awesome for off roading. Can be very challenging to do that with mid-sized real trailers. Although some folks do it.

Also never meant to imply that backcountry was impossible with kids. I know families that do multi night trips with infants. I just mean that's much less accessible for the average person even if they happen to be experienced backpackers. Like me.

    I love my 77 Boler 1300. I really do.

I was a Tent Only guy for my whole life, and we inherited this trailer so to speak.

Ripped out the fridge stove furnace as they were junk anyways added cabinets and storage to it instead, have a little buddy heater if it really gets cold. I can pick up the trailer tongue and roll it wherever it needs to go, it holds everything we need, its a warm memory foam bed up off the ground and its dry. Thats winning, while still actually enjoying the true camping side of it without the huge hassle of set up, take down, cleaning out, maintenance and cost involved with storage, winterizing, plumbing and electrical stuff. I spent the last 34 years camping on the ground in a tent and I fuckin hate setting them up or taking them down in the rain, let alone the getting in and out of them, their attraction for flies, and the way they smell.

We like going to crown land and smaller campsites where you dont find the obnoxious children and massive mobile homes with the satellite dish and 55 inch tvs and shit, thats ridiculous. Maybe if youre retired and all you do is cruise north america with no fixed address (That would be awesome) but yeah these "Holiday trailers" are getting absurd. Just get a cabin, will be cheaper in the long run, or as someone above said, park it, deck it, and make it a great place to go to thats already set up and no need to tow. And Its not one of those "I cant afford it so I hate the people that have them" type arguments, we would rather air travel and stay at awesome places for that price, we dont want to own a truck to pull it either, our SUV does just fine, so a huge savings on fuel too for the other 350+ days a year you dont need a truck.

And for those that camped when it was just the Spouse and yourself and now you have kids and your kids cant handle a weekend without absolutely all the comforts of home and sit inside on their ipads and blurays then you need better kids, or dont go camping. Write that fun chapter of your life off. Very few things in life that are better than sitting around the fire with friends and loved ones without cell service telling stories having bevvies cookin your snacks on the fire, eating chips, shelling peanuts, smokin cigars and taking a leak out under the stars, coming home smelling like you lived in a teepee for a week, unshaven, unkempt and laughing to yourself about the funny shit people did while you're on the drive to work the next day. Some folks will never experience what that's like and that's a real shame.

To each their own, I am in no place to judge what people should or shouldn't do with their free time and finances. I myself cant understand what the point is of taking home with you when you camp, like if you cant even rough it just a little bit, why not just stay home and your roast vegan spouted gluten free chai infused marshmallows on your Restoration Hardware faux fur reclaimed double wide sofa and not have to worry about the packing and unpacking and your kids dirty faces and purel soaked hands. But... we all know a lot of folks that move out here and do the whole 'Berta thing with trucks and quads and trailers and boats and skidoos and all this other shit. Then they cant figure out why they're drowning in 4 or 5 grand a month in high interest long term financing and storage/upkeep costs for these toys. Or they go to sell them and they still owe twice what its worth.

    Alas, I digress.

Yeah you're absolutely correct. It's an open statement. I am in no place to judge. But I have an opinion. My opinion is as stated. Those folks are ridiculous. I still accept that I could be wrong. Enjoy your glamping. lol

I have a small 17' trailer. Winterizing is easy. I just blow out the lines now with an air compressor. Electrical is nothing. Just keep some spare fuses around. Having a toilet, a furnace and a sink with running water makes camping a lot easier.

Mt Kidd is close, has lots of really private spots and the kids always like it.

Tunnel Mountain 3 is a wide open RV park, but you're actually really far away from your neighbours and the view is amazing.

Our bus conversion is going hella slow but the wife and I are doing it as we want a custom rig for festivals. Full kitchen, comfy queen bed, hot shower. Fuck tenting in those environments. We rented rvs for 3 years, then had a crappy old one for about 4. It's upgrade time baby I also have free storage so that's nice

I'm pretty far down the "glamping" path with my family. Trailer I just got rid of was 27' long and we carried a generator. New one will be about the same length but will have AC and a few more creature comforts. It's actually coming with a tv, but I'm taking that out before my kids see it. That's where I personally draw the line. No tv's. I know my wife would be watching it daily if we had one.

I really prefer trailers to a motorhome.

What I'm really picking up here is that camping is kinda like everything else, all kinds of different view and opinions on what is nicest.

    Shocking!

Not just that, but condescending attitudes towards people who don't agree with their opinions. Also a shocker for Beyond.

Yep, this went the way of all threads, but still, lots of confirmation of the premise of the article. People may have different reasons, but lots of folks choose to spend thier money on various types of RVs, and that market 9s growing.

I do miss the gaggles of hot girls in tents though.
