    Default The Sage Hill Rock

Drivers keep hitting large rock in suburban Calgary parking lot
'Sage Hill Rock' to be removed from northwestern shopping complex after numerous collisions

Drivers can't seem to stop hitting a giant rock in a suburban parking lot, despite it being an inanimate object surrounded by yellow-painted curbs.

"I don't know how you miss this big rock or how you cut the curb so tight you end up jacked up on the rock," said Brangwyn Jones, who lives in the northwest community of Sage Hill.

"I'm trying to wrap my mind around it, as are many of the community members."

After several collisions, the Sage Hill Rock — as it has become known among area residents — is now set to be removed from a retail shopping complex that is still being developed in the relatively new community.
    3 crashes on the weekend

At least three crashes were documented in photographs posted on the weekend to a community Facebook group that Jones administers.

Mark Nguyen took one of the initial photos of a SUV lying on its side next to the rock.

He said he was on his way to the nearby Walmart around 1 p.m. Saturday when he spotted the bizarre scene.

Photos of two more vehicles that had become hung up on the rock were also posted by the group. One of the vehicles was a small sedan with low clearance but it still managed to get on top of the large stone.

An employee of the nearby bottle depot, which opened in mid-October, said the rock was placed there to prevent motorists from driving over the curb but it's now going to be removed by Riocan, the company that manages the retail complex.

CBC News has reached out to Riocan for comment.
'This kind of made our weekend'

Jones said no injuries have been reported, as far as anyone is aware, and the incidents have become a bit of a running joke in Sage Hill.

"To be honest, this kind of made our weekend," he said.

"I was very surprised how many people were into the Sage Hill Rock."

When the community learned Monday the rock is to be removed, many on the Facebook group were upset at the loss.

"No! Leave it!," one person posted. "It's far too entertaining!"

    "Poor misunderstood rock," added another.

Jones said the rock "has become a part of us."

He added that he's thinking of organizing a type of "memorial" service for the rock that would raise funds for charity.

"Might as well make the best of this Sage Hill Rock," he said.
    Last-minute reprieve?

After this story was first published, an employee with the nearby bottle depot told the Sage Hill Facebook group the rock "might not be leaving," after all.

"Since it's become so valued to the community, we're trying to negotiate having it moved to a different area of the parking lot, where it is safe from vehicles and doesn't have to resort to rage flipping them," she wrote.

Jones was pleased by the development.

    "This is beautiful," he replied.

I actually had that picture in my head earlier when reading the Subaru ascent thread. Someone questioned the need of off-road capability, well here you go lol.

ES, maybe I'm missing the obvious (probably) but how would winter tires prevent these nincompoops from doing what they did in bare and dry conditions as can be seen in all three pictures?

What kind of a story could someone come up with to explain rolling one's vehicle on it's side because of contact with a larger stationary and what should be obvious rock in a relatively low speed parking lot maneuver?

There is absolutely no reasonable excuse for ANY of this, and all should be shamed!

    Taco and Murano, sure.

How does one launch a Integra onto that rock?

"Officer, that rock came out of no where!"

I can see the higher vehicles not seeing it, but that Integra should of.

Saw this last night. All 3 of those drivers should be forced to pass their driving test again before they can get back on the road.

This shows just how stupid some drivers are. I would leave the rock and everyone that has this happen to them should get a license suspension lol

Funny I was just talking to someone this weekend about how I find Toyota drivers to often be the most oblivious drivers out there. Not necessarily bad, but they seem to have blinders on and don't notice anything around them. These pictures show it may be all drivers of Japanese cars and not just Toyota's haha

All 3 of them are making right hand turns. They approach the spot to turn, forget about the rock (which they may have noticed) while looking both ways for oncoming vehicles. When it's safe, they can't see the rock anymore as it's on the passenger side and below the line of sight out the passenger window. So they crank their wheel causing the passenger wheel to point at the rock, body ground clearance is no longer an issue as the wheel well accommodates for the rock size, and within 2 seconds they're screwed.

So while I can understand how it happens, it's still dumb-assery at it's finest

I suspect this kind of driving happens all the time and in every neighborhood. There's a ton of scrapes on the curb of every parking lot. There just happens to be a big rock standing in the way in this particular parking lot that people can't just drive over.
