Default SPOILERS - Star Wars Episode 8 SPOILER Discussion

    lol.

So that was essentially a 2 hour movie about using the Force to face time?

I was hyped about it going in and I was still hyped leaving but as that hype faded and I started thinking about the movie I started to realize, that was probably the worst Star Wars movie yet. While I don't believe Ren when he says Ray's parents were nobodies, Killing Snoke halfway through the movie without really explaining anything about him was a joke. Leia waking up in the vacuum of space and force pulling herself to the ship? wtf?

Funny that the critic score on RT is 94% and the viewer score is at 60% and dropping fast. Usually it's the opposite with Fanboy popcorn flicks. Me thinks there might be some tomfoolery between critics and Disney.

One thing I will say is that the scene where she light speed crashed herself into the ship was unreal.

They apparently took down fan voting on RT right before it was going to hit rotten.

    What a joke.

I thought it would have been cooler if they decided that Luke had been dead for years and was just a force ghost this whole time, especially if he was going to be dead at the end of it all.

I bet they really regret killing off Luke and keeping Leia around considering what happened.

I hope we get a decent amount of luke force ghost in the next, I was also kind of excited for Finn to be gone until they saved him at the last second.

Snoke was such a waste of space.

Agreed. They wasted his character. I'm surprised they killed Snoke so quickly without even revealing who he really was. I would have liked a little development on his character or at least see him in action.

The movie was okay. Weak plot and character development. Really no Jedi/Sith dynamics and Rey's training was bleh and rushed. Luke became a grumpy, selfish and resentful old man and off-character from the original trilogy with no explanation other than him wanting to kill Kylo Ren. I thought there would be more to it. Rather than focusing on the development of Rey and Ben and/or the newly anti-Jedi Luke, they slipped in a pointless Finn/Rose Casino side quest and boring Poe Dameron story line. Seemed like the writer(s) didn't pay any mind to the plot and character development of the main characters and really just added those side stories to fill in extra minutes to make it over 2 hours.

Oh and they should have just left Leia in space.

The good. Very nice visuals and score and a Yoda cameo. That's pretty much it.

Rogue One and TFA is still better. I'm still in awe at how Rian Johnson destroyed Luke's character then killed him off.

Basically the same reaction EVERYONE should have to any remake or superhero (or remake superhero) movie in the past 5 years.

But people keep going, and this is the blockbuster to end all blockbusters apparently. I'll pirate it in a year. Maybe.

I'm pretty partial when I see movies that are parts of a franchise I'm a fan of so I knew the risks going in. I don't let my fandom convince me that a bad movie is good, which you can see a lot of people doing in the comments on reddit.

Disney definitely greased some critics. There is no way that the high praise was genuine.

Even if you ignore all of the massive, massive plot holes (Why did no one think to call in another First Order Ship to attack the rebels from the front? What kind of bombs drop down in space? Why wasn't Rose's sister sucked out but Leia was? Why has no one ever thought to light speed ram a ship before? Does the director realize that now every battle in the series is moot when you can just hyperdrive one ship through anything?) there was not a single aspect of that movie that was "wow" yet you're going to tell me 90% of critics were floored by this movie?

    Give me a break.

Too hyped, almost didn't deliver. 1st half was slow. 2nd half picked up.

As expected, Porgs while no Jarjar, it's almost as bad.

This slowly feels like Marvel movies. You can deviate much from the set course.

This is why I'm kind of worry about Disney taking over Fox.

    Best scene ever.

But the chase is stupid too. Whey can't The Order light speed in front of them to pick them off instead doing basically the Benny Hill chase.

Light speed ship crash would have definitely made Death Stars a lot less of an issue.

Almost as dumb as how the executor got destroyed.

not a fan of this one.

Kylo Ren's story is still pretty weak. Why is he so angry? Someone stole his lunch or something? Luke's story is almost as weak because of that.

    So Rey is nobody, ok.

Never care too much about Finn.

You may as well kill off Snoke by falling down an elevator shaft.

The whole chase scene and the plan to escape? ok

Phasma is just a chrome boba fett.

Dunno know about the critics, this one can't even remotely touch Empire. Empire is punch after punch non-stop to the end.

Turbo lasers didn't work 30 years ago. What's the main defense? Turbo lasers.

Bombers? Really? There is gravity in space for vertical ww2 style bombing?

Luke tried to kill him because he saw Kylo turned dark.

The Force Awakens was a strong reboot to set up something big...and they wiffed with this one. Competent sure, but forgettable. All part of their formula I guess.

Felt like a Pirates of the Carribean/Marvel movie (though with a better score).

    Okay here we go.

Good and the bad. For the record, I thought this movie was terrible. Just terrible. And I love Star Wars, so I was mega-disappointed walking out.

    The Good!

It was beautiful to watch. Almost too much going on, visually, but it was gorgeous. Even the sets that didn't make sense, like Snooke's chambers, were very cool to look at. The lightspeed ram was beautiful. But to me the best scene was Luke walking out alone and facing the AT-ATs. It just looked so epic (and I hate that word).

    Thaaaaat's about it though.

    The Bad!

Everything else. I'm not even sure where to start. The first hour of the movie, I was just like "what the fuck am I watching here?" I had no idea how to think about it.

Luke: He was totally out of character. The tossing the lightsaber over the shoulder. That was THE moment from TFA, and it's tossed aside like garbage. He just didn't seem like any shadow of his former self. Maybe that was the point, but still, it just didn't seem like Luke Skywalker. Also, his appearance at the end? Yes, it was fucking badass for him to walk out alone, facing the invading First Order (and wtf, why is it the first order? The books had it right, call it the Imperial Remnant) alone. It was heroic. But he wasn't actually THERE. He was never in any danger at all! It cheapened the moment. He could've died on the battlefield as a hero, and a legend. Instead, he died alone, on a rock.

Finn: What's his purpose? His entire arc could have been deleted, and it wouldn't have affected the movie at all. Actually, if you delete Finn, Rose, and Poe from the movie, it SAVES lives. I'm not sure what Finn is supposed to be? He's a former storm trooper who's not quite cool with the Resistance; so he's Han Solo? Solo was an ST, and didn't like the rebellion, except he was actually cool, had some sense of twisted morals, and had an interesting backstory (smuggling, the Hutts, etc.) I don't know about Finn. His character sucks (and John Boyaga doesn't act very well.)

Kylo Ren: Man, it's hard to be the villain when you have to live up to Darth Vader, because you're never going to. I don't even know what he's mad about? That Luke tried to kill him, or so he thought? Sure, but that seems a little weak for him to go off the rails like we think he has in TFA. My huge problem with Kylo Ren is twofold: One, he's not scary. He's not intimidating. Adam Driver doesn't look mean at all. He looks kinda goofy, actually. Two: The character sucks. I get that Kylo is supposed to be conflicted... Star Wars is all about that, but man... if he can't kill Rey, and he can't kill his mother, then WHY did he kill Han? His death serves no purpose at all. It wasn’t his downfall to the dark side. It was nothing. It was the other defining moment of TFA, and it meant nothing. I was so mad about that when I thought of it after.

Snooke: Just what? What was he? We know nothing about him. He was a big mystery in TFA, and he was this little shriveled man that was killed by a man whose MIND HE WAS CONTROLLING and he didn't see his death coming. How the hell does that work? Awful, all around.

Rey: She's boring, really. She's definitely Luke reincarnate, but we've already had that story. Everything about her has progressed way too fast, sorta like Luke in ANH/ESB/ROJ, but for her it's even faster. She had no teacher, none. I didn't like it in TFA, and it was worse here.

Rose: Just WHAT. Didn't need to exist, period. And then she kissed Finn? They knew each other for like 20 hours!

Poe: Mehhhh, not a bad arc, he's actually not a bad character, but if it was an anywhere decent universe, he would be dead. He mutinied, and caused people to die because of that. Just because he didn't like that he didn't know what was going on (which I thought that Admiral Jurassic Park Lady played well, because the tracking could've been a mole on board). In any military, he would've been locked up and probably executed for that. But no, because he's right at the end (sorta) he's fine.

The WHOLE JEDI thing. It was glossed over in like FIVE MINUTES. I thought this entire movie would be about the history of Luke's Academy, and training Rey, and delving into the mysticism of the Jedi. Nothing, nothing at all about any of that. That could've been an hour, easy.

And then just a bunch of silly other stuff. The milking?! The little cute things that are obviously toys. No mention on Chewie feeling Han's loss. Even though it was right after he died. The slowest car chase in the galaxy. The hyperspace jump into the dreadnaught, Well, that kinda sets the tone for every other space battle now, doesn't it? Why not just do that to the DeathStar? BB8 being a hero in an AT-ST. Well shit, that little fucker can do anything. The inputted comedy felt off-genre... more of the Avengers kinda crap, not Star Wars.

I think another part of my problem with it is that I've read a TON of the books. And they all establish such a better canon than these movies do. I want a Grand Admiral Thrawn movie or two. Or Kyp Duran. A movie about the Spice Wars and the Hutts. The hero doesn't need to be a Jedi. Rogue One did just fine without a Jedi.

Speaking of Rogue One.... that is how you make a perfect Star Wars movie. No fluff, no romance, just a good simple story. Star Wars should be such an easy story to write, but they can't seem to do it.

This one sucked, IMO. I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

TFA was a good set up, unfortunately TLJ missed every beat. Disjointed story, zero character development from TFA, nonsensical things happen throughout, misplaced jarring attempts at comedy, etc. Since TFA, fans have speculated on storylines far superior to what we got. Rey didn't switch sides, Kylo didn't switch sides, motives were not explored or expanded on, Snoke was a waste of time, and Luke's actions made no sense. He was willing to sacrifice his life to turn Vader when he sensed good in him, but was ready to mow down his sister and best friends kid because he, "had a bad feeling about it". Great.

The force was basically turned into an anything goes type of superpower that begs the question, "if they could do that, then why didn't they do that before in previous movies???". Leia can superman through space, Luke can astral project, Yoda can affect things in reality in ghost form, Kylo and Rey can space Skype. And now we learn you can also destroy pretty much anything by suicide hyperspacing through it, begging the question, "WHY THE FUCK DON'T YOU ALWAYS USE THIS TACTIC". Oh, and i guess we have a higher level of technology in our reality since we have remote controlled pilotless drones figured out, but for some reason in Star Wars someone needs to stay behind to pilot the ship? lol

The entire plot with Fin going on this secret mission to find this code cracker at some Fifth Element style casino with oh so funny gags such as, CGI drunk alien putting coins in BB8 thinking it's a slot machine, and an ultra ham fisted heart felt message about animal cruelty and slavery. And an overblown CGI shit fest of Fin and his friends riding chocobos through the casino destroying everything. It felt like i was reliving some shitty moment from the prequels.

The biggest crime with Rey's character was that she's a boring, stock, hero. I was hoping she'd turn to the darkside or join Kylo to form a new empire, anything to give her some personality and intrigue. For some reason i was expecting they would explore the light side/dark side a bit more beyond the boring good/evil paradigm. I liked Rey in TFA, but was holding out hope for her character to grow and progress in a somewhat meaningful and interesting way.

I had a feeling this movie was in trouble from the beginning when they opened up with some Abbott and Costello, "can you hear me?" type comedy routine between General Hux and Po. I just don't get what they were going for here and where they want to go with Episode 9. They would have been better served to have filmed the entire trilogy all at once with one writer/director. Now it just seems like a mess. I guess i'll hold out for the Snyder Cut.

not a fan and Looper was massively overrated. He might be a good director, but his writing is weak. Which in the end was my biggest problem with TLJ, it's just not a good movie regardless of the plot point nitpicking. Poor / boring / uninspired story, bad and jarring dialogue, weak screenplay, people doing stupid things to advance the story, inconsistent actions, and constant breaking of the 4th wall which is something i'd expect more in a Marvel superhero movie than a SW movie. One thing i do laugh at though is people saying Disney killed Star Wars. Bullshit, Lucas already accomplished that back in 1999. The one nice thing about Disney and having different directors and writers is that there is always hope that the next movie could be different and better than the last. If Lucas was doing these he'd just be piling shit on top of shit.
