Auto Obsessed New Vehicle Detail - 2018 BMW 440i

Auto Obsessed performed a New Vehicle Detail to this 2018 BMW 440i. The exterior underwent a full decontamination wash including iron and tar removal. The wheels, wheel wells, doorjambs, exhaust, and engine bay were extensively detailed with a host of OBSSSSD Premium Products. Imperfections were then corrected, before application of XPEL Ultimate Paint Protection Film to most of the vehicle.

PROCESS - Using Griot’s Garage Iron and Fallout Remover to decontaminate the vehicle, the purple streaking is product reacting with the iron particles stuck to the clear coat.

Would that film ever yellow out like those 3m bumper and hood covers the dealers have on there cars?

all the dealers i have dealt with in the last couple years have switched to xpel so when the dealer (salesman) says 3m, its likely xpel. Xpel claims to have a 10 year warranty against yellowing also.

IMO, you're still going to get dullness/discoloration someday because if auto manufacturers can't figure out how to have paint and plastics stop dulling out when they're dealing with something hard and unforgiving like a headlight or body panel, how can a company making a flexible polyurethane clear film do any better for UV protection? But is it going to yellow like 3m did 10 years ago? hell no. is it even going to yellow? probably not. How long is it going to last? no one knows because we need time to tell, but I have yet to see old film that hasn't discolored over time, and equally I am impressed how far current gen stuff has come in the last 10 years. It'll dull out eventually though which is what most people probably really mean when they bring up yellowing, and if you leave bugs and bird shit on it, it will acid etch too which imo is worse... but then again so will your paint. Bird shit can permanently etch paint quickly, as quickly as within a couple hours, to the point where wet sanding may be necessary to fix it.

So nowadays i'd say how long it looks good is up to you; park it in a garage and dont let garbage sit on the surface of it and it'll probably look good longer than you want to own it. Treat it like crap by washing it once a year with a rake and leaving it parked out under the sun 24/7 or under a tree, and it'll look like garbage pretty quick. But imo who cares if you treat it well and it discolors or dulls out or gets etched someday; the whole point to this stuff is to preserve the car looking good, so if the film starts looking like crap in 5 years, rip it off, and if you still like the car and plan to keep it another 5 years, get it redone. It did its job. Take this 440 for example; just the headlights alone to replace them if they get pitted and dulled out from rockchips are about 1600 each for that car, which is actually dirt cheap for a germany luxury car nowadays (S class merc lights are about 5g each, lexus usually are around 2500-3g, heck even a ford escape halogen lighthousing is $1400...) so right there xpeling the lights just paid for itself big time.
