Default Point and shoot, good low light, small size recommendations?

Looking for a point and shoot. Want small size, good low light. Will never be enlarging anything, megapixels don't really matter. A bit of physical zoom is good, but don't need much.

Probably nice if it can do auto wifi backups to google photo or something. Some simple in-camera editing would be nice too. The editing about as good as my Samsung galaxy would be fine.

Been a long time since I looked at cameras. Canon used to have nice simple ones. Anyone else I should be looking at?

Take a look at the Canon G7X series and the sony RX100 series. Both have a 1 inch sensor which will be better in low light than smaller sensor P&S. Sony RX100 has been highly reviewed over the last few years and the best (or worst?) part is each new generation they release, they increase the price and include more and more features. On the other hand, I don't know if the image quality increase much if any with each new generation. The good part is that there will likely be a model within your price range. They're all the way up to RX100 mk V now and price range between 500 to I believe almost 1200. The sony RX100 seemed to be class leading for a few years however theres more competition nowadays. I haven't kept up as much with P&S cameras.

You can always search RX100 competition as well. They seemed to be used almost as a benchmark

We bought the RX100 MK4 to take pictures on our cross Canada trip. It is an awesome camera, albeit with some annoyances (menu system from hell). It's low light performance continuously surprises me, and it takes great videos as well as pictures. If you have watched my videos from Packwood Tour, they were taken with the Sony. The MK4 can take short slow motion videos up to ~1000 frames per second, and I love the OLED viewfinder. Oh, and it truly fits in my pocket.

If you get one, be sure to buy the add-on "handle" (a glue on piece of shaped rubber). Otherwise, the camera is no fun to hold.

Holy shit I had no idea point and shoot cameras could be so expensive.

I should clarify I want one that's cheaper to loose or break than my cellphone, which I could replace for $500 easily.

So yeah, under $500 is the budget. I'm sure those cameras mentioned are great, but out of my league. Also, I'm not an enthusiast and this isn't even a real hobby for me. Just need to document shit with the kids and take pics of cheap beer cans for my annual reviews.

Honestly it sounds like a new phone with a better camera is what you want.
Any in-camera editing will be likely be incredibly painful on the tiny screen and camera interface compared to a phone screen with snapseed.

I don't think you are going to find any new/modern small P&S that is good in low light for $500 (or at least what I could call "good") and that does everything else on your list.

    See these recent threads:

    https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/406...ecommendations

    https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/405...recommendation

Honestly you might consider getting a Google Pixel 2 - low light performance is way ahead of everyone else, and the camera performance is in a category of it's own (for a smartphone). They way they handle noise in low light photos is very unique. The Pixel 2 camera checks all of your boxes except for "physical zoom". You aren't going to find a P&S that has good WiFi backup capabilities and useful in-camera editing. Free unlimited original quality photo and video (including 4K) cloud storage as well.

The fact that you want automatic WiFi backups, simple editing, small size, don't care about MP/prints, etc. suggests to me that you might be happiest just going with a really good smartphone camera.

If you also want to take pictures of moving subjects, then you also need to look at something different.

I should probably have just tagged along in the $400 camera thread. Agree I want "modern" smartphone quality. My Galaxy S7 is damned good. However, I like the ergonomics of a small camera, and I sort of like single-function devices, which may be abnormal.

Wifi backups aren't crucial, but would be handy.

Anyone make a "smartphone camera" that isn't a smartphone?

Samsung Galaxy Camera was a thing way back... not sure if they're still around or at what price point.

No, not really, nothing modern. Other than ergonomics, a good smartphone checks all of your requirements. If you want an actual camera, you give up everything else you want except getting a physical zoom. You can buy cases that improve the camera ergonomics of smartphones, but I'm not sure how convenient that would be. The trouble is that most of the items on your list aren't things people are typically looking for in a P&S. The "good in low light" requirement is also extremely hard to meet given that all of these choices have tiny image sensors with very poor low light performance. An exception is the Pixel 2 due to how Google uniquely tackles the noise problem - that's not to say it's as good as a DSLR or something with a much larger sensor, but it's way better than other small sensor stuff.

You can also get WiFi enabled SD cards (Eye-Fi) but they are generally garbage.

Most people want a small camera that takes good pictures in low light and those two combined criteria is literally the hardest thing to get from an engineering standpoint.

Well "good" in low light is a relative thing. I'm not expecting professional quality.

Well the Nokia Lumia series does a pretty good job of low light photography across the entire product line.

I don't think there's any new products though so you'd have to go used.

Plus, I can't think of anyone who advocates for Windows Phones other than @flipstah.

Windows Phone rule! I did have to concede because the lack of app support. But Lumia are for iPhone lovers who hates Apple!

This goes over your budget but any Motorola Z phone with the Hasselblad True Zoom attachment sounds like it would have totally checked off a bunch of boxes for you (or you could always go used).

I really don't want a phone. I have a phone with a good enough camera but I like to put my phone away when I'm around family or on vacation.

Guess any cheap p&s will do. Maybe this one:

In the ultra cheap P&S market, they are all pretty much the same. They all use 1/2.3" sensors just like a good smartphone. Just pick one that has the price and basic features you're after and that's about all you need to worry about. If that's all you need, it's an ideal outcome because of how cheap they are.

There is a canon s110 on kijiji for $100. If you're ok with used it's a good bet. Solid p&s at a throw away price.

It also checks off a lot of boxes. Wide aperture, larger sensor, wifi, decent ISO.

I would trust that camera over anything double or triple the price.

Just make sure to cycle the power on it to make sure that the lens cover doesn't stick.

You guys talked me out of it. Will revisit this issue in summer when we do our vacationing.
