I give up with our north facing front yard sidewalk. We must have 3" of solid ice on our sidewalk. Storm drain 3 houses down is under a foot of snow and ice and the road is built up higher then the sidewalk with snow so nothing can drain anywhere.

Put down salt and it turns to slush for an hour so you can scoop it away only to freeze back over an hour later. It's never ending.
the only real way to combat this is to religiously shovel the road from your place all the way to the storm drain all winter so it never turns to ice. Once its compacted and has melted andnrefrozen its a nightmare.

Of course, that "solution" is a huge pain in the ass too.

Tiger torch. start at the drain, and work your way up.

Takes forever. Buckets of really hot water are faster, but making a 100' trench in six inches of ice is going to be a bastard no matter what.

I do find the tiger torch relaxing though. I torch off my front steps a few times a year just for stress relief.

I considered making a trench along the street since I have the drain on the corner but im pretty sure too many neighbors would get pissed if they had to drive their huge suv's over a gap between the ice and their driveway, for now Im just trying to rid all the ice infront of my driveway and corner so that atleast next time it snows I wont have to deal with a foot of ice everywhere. One problem i have is one of my neighbors has a huge snow blower and he removes all the snow on the street (about 50 m long) that he lives on but he piles the snow up between my sidewalk and the road so now I have a windrow 3 foot high along the sidewalk so no one can park there and its all solid ice.

I feel like this thing below could come in handy in winter here:

I just watched the most bizarre thing. I live across the road from a culdesac and a mainland chinese couple moved into one of the houses about 6 months ago. Anyway there is some scattered ice and snow in the culdesac but its all crunchy nothing i would consider majorly slipperly. Anyway this chinese lady backs her car out of the garage then does a 20 point turn in her honda pilot on the driveway even reversing into the snowbank on the side and then drives away.

I noticed she did have her baby in the carseat in the back but still its a fucking honda pilot. She wasnt too scared to drive on the ice thats there and she wasnt driving slowly by any means.

Up in the classy west I feel like that special weather statement will mean wet snow, snow and snow. Fingers crossed we dont get freezing rain - the freezing rain in Edmonton this year has been brutal.

Believe is a very different word from Hope.

Considering the two things I really look forward to in the year are Driving and Golf I really need to find a new place to live lmao.

Weather Underground is currently forecasting 197mm of snow in the next three days. I suspect in most areas the ground is still soldily frozen, so not much of that will melt right away unless we end up getting some of it as rain.

No significant melting forecast after today for at least 10 days. Winters back baby, fire up the Honda Fit!

Rain would actually be a godsend, get some water flowing which is the only thing that really makes a dent in the ice.

The rain will be barely above 0 though so likely won’t help as much as we would like.

Rain at around 0 plus asphalt temps below 0 isn't going to be a recipe for melting.
