I live my life 1/4 of a foot at a time. Nothing else matters, not my gear box, not my clutch, not my brake pads and all their bullshit. For that 1 sec or less, I'm free.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

In your theory, car 5 now needs to travel 8 instead of 4 car lengths to get to the intersection. That's a lot of extra distance when you're car #15
Exactly. And people need as little distance as possible because their reaction times are so bad, they'll get that car length anyways as soon as the first car starts moving.

Of course this will extend overall distance to the intersection for the cars at the back, but if everyone was attentive and started moving on green it would create the best flow.

This would mean people would need to be more observant and quit being self-absorbed on a green light.

If only 1% of everyone sucks at driving, it still causes chaos.

Everyone sucks to a certain extent. I’d say the ones that complain the most about people around them are the least self aware

Technically if you were already stopped, no, you aren't partially at fault.
Interesting. So, other than morals, what's stopping someone who hits you from behind claiming that they were rear ended and the guy took off so they won't have an at-fault insurance claim raising their rates (of course their rear bumper would already need to be damaged)? This old thread got me thinking about such a scenario:

I would assume the same thing that would stop them from claiming you backed into them.

I guess so, a good old he said/she said mess, yuck. Insurance companies have probably seen enough of those BS claims to tell which ones are really BS.
