    Default Sunwing strikes again! (literally)

    https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/sunwin...fire-1.3747926

WestJet says one of its planes had just arrived in Toronto from Cancun Friday night when it was struck by a Sunwing aircraft, an incident that sparked flames and prompted an emergency evacuation on a freezing cold night.

WestJet says 168 guests and six crew were aboard flight WS2425 when it was struck by the Sunwing plane shortly after 6 p.m. According to WestJet, the Sunwing aircraft was pushing back from the gate.

Footage shot inside the WestJet plane shows passengers screaming and crying as flames erupt on the Sunwing plane.

Those aboard exited the WestJet plane on an emergency slide to frigid conditions outside. Toronto is under an extreme cold warning, with temperatures dropping to -21 C.

Sunwing said in a statement that no passengers or crew were on board its aircraft at the time or the collision, and that the incident occurred while the plane was “under tow.”

The airport confirmed to CTV News that the Sunwing aircraft was under tow when it made contact with the WestJet flight, and that fire crews extinguished a fire on the Sunwing plane.

Photos from the tarmac show extensive damage sustained to the tail of a Sunwing jet.

A WestJet spokeswoman said there are unconfirmed reports of minor injuries.

Emergency response crews, including firefighters, are on the scene.

The airport told CTV News that operations at Terminal 3 will be affected, and that an investigation is being conducted.

WestJet said it is in contact with the Transportation Safety Board, the GTAA and other groups responding to the incident.
The part about "no crew on board the Sunwing jet" strikes me as odd. Who the hell tows an aircraft without a brake rider? I wonder if they also didn't have a wing walker.

Looks like the Sunwing APU caught fire. Oops! No one to hit the APU fire button in the flight deck so im guessing it burned until the ARFF showed up.

Haven’t flown the 37, but doesn’t the APU self extinguish after a certain time period? Or do you have to pull the T-Handle?

/armchairquarterback but I wouldn’t command an evacuation after a wingtip strike especially when the only few is on another aircraft. Why did they evacuate on the same side as the fire if it was truly a concern?

So far as I know, no Boeings self extinguish, in case of faulty fireloops. There is however a button for the APU bottle in the right wheel well... if someone trained were there to push it.

    Edit: Wrong gear

I forgot the 737 had it there. I remember the 757/767 had the APU fire shutoff on the backside of the nose landing gear.

(Checks ebay for used and slightly-charred APU to build a jet kart)

According to Twitter (so consider the source), the storm caused upwards of 40 airport employees to call in sick.

I believe it. If I worked the ramp at Pearson for $12 an hour, and had to commute the 400/427/401 to get to work when it snows here, I wouldn't go either lol.

$15/h as of Jan 1st. And are you suggesting ramp workers are getting paid minimum wage?

Yeah, pretty much all of them who don't have 3+ years of experience make min. wage, and not many stick around that long.

I absolutely know that they are, because I interviewed for a ramp spot with Air Canada at YYZ and Porter at YTZ last summer, and it was $12.25 an hour. Same with catering, and all that other shit on the ground.

Looks like it's up to $14 an hour now! Woo!
