Default Need to unlock phone. Don't know carrier

Phone is an older Samsung Galaxy 5 (GT-I5500).

The Telus sim from my current phone won't connect, so I know it's not Telus.

The generic IEMI checkers don't show the carriers.

Freedom, Virgin, Bell, etc have their own checkers. Freedom shows it won't work, and Virgin say's "pretty sure". Problem is, I don't know if those answers are just simply referring to the specs of the phone, or the locked / unlocked status.

If I start calling the carriers, can they tell me via the IEMI # if the phone is locked to their network? Is there any faster way to find out?

    Try this

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...uyen.phoneinfo

    Which I found here: https://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...ne-locked.html

Also I'm pretty sure that phone is way too old to support Freedom's frequency so cross that off your list.

I'd just go to a mall and go to a store and ask and they can probably drop a test sim into it and tell you.

    Thanks for the replies.

The phone won't be used for web browsing, but rather the occasional text, and the occasional short local and long distance call. As such, I've found the best plan to be 7-11's Speak Out $20 a month plan, on the Rogers network. It's unlimited texting, and 100 minutes of local and long distance calls. I called Rogers and the rep said it wasn't locked to Rogers, but if I get a Rogers sim card at a kiosk, they can unlock it. Does that sound right?

Jwslam: I don't have an SD card for the phone, so it won't let me install that app. It looks like I'll be heading to the mall...ugh.

Question is how do you have a phone that you don't know the network of? Buy it off Kijiji? Did you find it?

If you scroll through the apps, you might find a providers bloatware. most providers usually put some in the phone

Bought it off kijiji a few months ago for a purpose I decided to abandon.

    The phone was hard reset.

According to Rogers's site, to unlock a Rogers phone, just drop in a non-Rogers SIM card and a code will be sent to unlock. So, perhaps it works for other carriers as well.

When I tried my Telus SIM, the unlock code message did appear. I was afraid to pursue it as the SIM is for my business as well as personal use, and I didn't know if there would be possible consequences to the SIM. It's a risk I'm not willing to take.

I'll head to a Rogers Kiosk in the next few days.

Thanks for the suggestion though Duaner.
