The explorers and trucks in cgy are running MRCD. A V1 picks them up as a very very weak K-Band after you have already passed. I have seen them park illegally on sidestreets in order to cover 2 lanes of a major roadway. I have blown by them on a 3 lane road by accident and never got a flash or ticket. I was in the far left lane. The signal is so weak 2 lanes seem to be their range but who knows for sure.

Interesting factoid. Recently moved to red deer. The RCMP use cameras with LiDAR. My ALP will jam them from the front constantly until I pass the truck on the opposite side of the road. Range is a lot better than MRCD and almost nobody has rear facing anti-laser. And yes, each time there was a guy with a book and a camera rig in the driver's seat. Was not an active LIDAR trap. Just a dude with a book and camera running LiDAR taking pictures of the passing cars. Maybe cgy will start as well. MRCD detectors are pricey but almost nobody runs rear facing laser protection.
Lidar is only useful when the weather and roads are perfect. Any kind of mist, fog, snow, dust, rain and they stop working reliably.

The mobile radar units here in Calgary are making a killing already. I dont see them changing these out.

Also, its cheaper to get a weathered plate going that anti-lidar.

99% of people don't pay attention, or are completely oblivious to what is happening, so the super obvious F150's and Explorers rake in the cash. They park one on glenmore all the time with the roof mounted flashes, and it's sitting on the shoulder with it's four way's on - could not possibly be more obvious and you can see the flashes going off non-stop as people drive by. In the summer it was there almost every single day on my commute. It's not worth the city's time to go after the 1%.

It's the same reason why speed on green cameras should only ever catch people 0-1 times, but they are far more effective than that. My boss has a drawer full of speed on green tickets from the same intersection he drives through every day.

I love the one that sits in the construction zone on Deerfoot and people are ripping by at 100km/h in a 80 zone and I'm like "Smile, picture is coming your way"

Exactly - it's there all the time and it doesn't even matter, they will still catch most people driving by completely oblivious. There is one on memorial like that too - they sit on that road that runs just parallel and they make no attempt to hide it and it's there all the time.

The speed on green intersections are marked with at least 2, sometimes 3 giant signs, all facing the same way, warning you there is a camera there (not all red light cameras are SoG but it's best to assume they are). Nobody should ever be getting caught at those intersections, yet they flash all day long. Even if you have no idea what a SoG camera is, the signs are still telling you there is a camera of some kind at that intersection. I can see one from my office window and when it gets darker outside, out of the corner of my eye I just see constant flashing haha. I understand people can get distracted and may not notice once in a while but the majority of people either don't learn or have no clue - if they did we wouldn't even have the cameras because they wouldn't make the city any money.

I wonder how many people scrape off part of a number on a weathered licence plate or put some white/red tape over part of a number to make it look like something else - if the only penalty is another ticket, there may not be much downside. Quick googling suggests it's a $115 ticket which is a lot cheaper than most automated traffic tickets.

OR get a James Bond style plate switcher or one of these haha:

You're wrong, it is not MRCD. Its different. MRCD is only used in Edmonton so far.

It is a very weak polarized K-band focused on a short distance in front of the unit.

Years ago when I was all gung-ho about anti-laser anti-radar etc. I looked into those coatings and every single one of them was 100% useless - at best they slightly reduced the effective range of LiDar. Anything that was supposed to defeat photo radar was equally useless. Has anything changed?

My wife got a SoG ticket. I asked her if she noticed the giant camera sign. She said "oh, is that what that is?". Sigh.

It is probably the most ingenious use if cover I've seen to date.

    Better than this spot?

Well at least now she knows - as long as she sees the signs she shouldn't get any more (hopefully).

A friend of mine was driving around looking for an address and went though the same photo radar 3 times in 5 minutes Got 3 tickets time stamped 1-2 min apart.

    MOTHERFUCKER!

I saw that kind of a ford explorer on the side of Deerfoot today going North. If that is true, I am getting a ticket in the mail...

If you are looking for something to help protect against photo radar and SoG, try NoPhoto. It pretty big on radar detector forums and has a reputation for working quite well. Made by some ex-Escort guys. Its not cheap though.
