Yeah the fact that car deaths and gun deaths are equal is shocking. Hundreds of millions of cars on the road every day for people to commute and get around life and somehow guns kill as many people?
2018 is the last year with complete data for the USA - roughly 38,000 car accident deaths, roughly 38,000 firearms death. It is crazy that the number is almost identical. For firearms, 24 and a half thousand of these were suicide. I somehow doubt that 2/3 of the car deaths are suicides, but with 400 million firearms in the USA ( or more), and obviously less vehicles than this number, what does this say about American society? You're as likely to die by a bullet - suicide or otherwise - as in a car wreck? Cars are as dangerous as firearms? 90% of firearms deaths in the USA are suicides or gang warfare? Lots of ways to think about it.

Let's go with cars are as dangerous as firearms premise.

Need training and licensing from a govt body to drive a car. There are people who are unable to drive and can't pass a driving test. FAFO with said license they take it away.
Guns tho is more of a YoLo.

You don't understand the USA's stance on firearms if you think they could adopt anything even remotely close to the rules and regulations we have in Canada. One of the biggest issues people tend to think is that gun owners are all on the verge of losing it and shooting up a mall. When in actuality good and bad people can own them, just like a vehicle. Some people can drive their vehicle their whole life, follow the rules, and never hurt anyone. Then there are people who choose to drive a van through a crowd full of people. It's not a vehicle/gun issue. Crazy people are always going to do messed up shit and whether they use a gun/truck/potato it's always going to reflect poorly on the industry of the instrument they choose.
If mental health is the issue, then health care should be universal, no? Isn't it Switzerland that is the only other developed country that is remotely close in terms of gun ownership per capita, yet they don't seem to have such a problem with gun violence (self-inflicted or otherwise)?

To the car/gun debate point, we see it often (especially because this is a car forum) when bad drivers are pointed out and some wonder how other people got their license. I would imagine that if licensing wasn't required to drive a car, our situation would arguably worse, right? And yes, I realize that it also steps on my argument that licensing doesn't fix everything, but it also supports my argument that barriers to entry like licensing and insurance requirements are not a restriction of rights, so much as they are a price for the privilege.

Switzerland also has mandatory conscription and are allowed to keep their weapon after service is over. I think it helps develop a higher respect for the danger of guns, and maturity required to use them.
