    Default Vancouver Island Suggestions

    Hi everyone,

I have 10 days off over spring break with the kids(5 & 7) and was initially thinking of taking them down to Moab but by then its already high season and the prices are through the roof. Instead, I was thinking of heading out to the island as its been a trip I have wanted to do for a while. I haven't been there since I was a kid so I am looking for some guidance. The plan really is to bike around, hike a bit, and to check out some beaches. No real schedule just a road trip with a 5 day stay in the middle really.

I was thinking Tofino or Ucluelet but really making that decision simply from places available on VRBO.

Suggestions on location? Things to do? Etc?

    Thanks Craig

Do it. I prefer uclulet but it all comes down to the vrbo/Airbnb you find. Maybe four days there, and a few on the other side of the island? If you want hiking and biking over near Port Renfrew is good too.

There seems to be more available in Ucluelet, was just unsure if Tofino was notably better or something? I will likely just stay in one place and travel around to others as switching locations can be a hassle with the kids.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Tofino is "cooler" but that's why I like uclulet more. I'm not cool. Both have everything you need.
Decent little walking /biking trail right in uclulet that's good for kids and is right beside some neat little beaches. Look up wild Pacific Trail.

Don't go. Ferry is a waste of money. Surf is weak AF in Tofino compared to elsewhere and you won't even see an LNG plant on the coast.
If you drive out there expect to be given the finger, double parked once they see you're a red plater.

Ive only been to that side of the island once, but Ucluelet seemed a hell of a lot less tourist trappy then Tofino. I couldn't get out of tofino fast enough

Unless you enjoy biking and hiking in the rain, I would adjust your expectations for the Island during that time of year. If you're surfing in Tofino, then rain makes no difference.

Oh dear god no. That's the worst tourist trap on the entire island. It USED to be somewhat tolerable when it was filled with locally made products (we're still using a set of hippie made bowls/plates from 15 years ago), but now it's just a big flea market with mostly made in china junk.

Goats are still there, and the bakery is still good, but the whole area... *shudder*. I guess if you've never been, and your wife likes to shop then it might be worth it, but I've been there far too many times.

It's still gonna be rainy season during spring break. Were you planning to fly or drive to Moab? There's reasonably priced flights to Denver ($350 return) still.

EDIT: Wow you weren't kidding about Moab high season. $200/night to sleep in a tent or trailer.

Always drive to Moab- I would have dirt bikes and mountain bikes if we were going there so cant really get around it. I have done the drive in under 16 hours without kids, with kids it would likely be a 2 day trip!

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I understand it will likely be raining.....but there wont be snow!

Thats a nice photo of Pipers Lagoon in Nanaimo (had sex on that beach a few times) but its in no based in reality for that time of year. The chances of rain/drizzle are very good.
