Sorry to hear that. You're correct about the insurance/phone replacement scam.
What G-ZUS said. Or as per my post on first page, sell it it as an as-is blacklisted device either on Kijiji or eBay, for parts or otherwise.
People know that you're stuck between a rock and a hard place with a device that doesn't work in Canada, so you can either hold on to it or just cut your losses and move on.
Personally I'd say sell it in person locally for cash because eBay doesn't offer good seller protection. You'll slit your wrists if you decide to sell online and run into a scammy buyer haha.
