Default Outside plugs shorting when plugging in my car?

This just started happening this morning. Went to go plug in my car and the on light on the plug goes out once I plug in the car. I head to the basement and have to reset the fuse for the plugs outside. I try again and it shorts again...any ideas as to why? I haven't had an issue all winter till now..

    Broken cord or bad heater.

Grab a multimeter and check the plug ends. Use ohms

Just to add, it could be either the extension cord you're using, or the block heater cord itself (which is easily replaceable).

The light indicator on the cord lights up when I plug into the house so perhaps the cord itself is good. I will give the heater cord on the car a good whipe down too and try again. Will go and get a multi meter and check as well

This. I had a tenant a couple years ago who was losing his shit because every time he would plug in his car the outlet would trip and he couldn't keep his car plugged in in the winter. Mind you this was an idiot who started plugging his car in at zero degrees. Anyway when I showed him that you can plug you in absolutely anything else or any other vehicle without it tripping he still would not believe me that the problem was in his car, as it was a good car and there is nothing wrong with it, it is in very good condition!

Ultimately, since he was month to month, I just got rid of him as it was easier than trying to reason with somebody that stupid.

Trace your car's block heater wire, it may have worn through or have been pinched and is shorting against the chassis.

Wasn’t I just getting bashed when I said I didn’t like plugging in my car inside the garage due to potential fire risk?
Good thing the breaker is doing it’s job.

Yea check the resistance as firebane mentioned. Anyone drive away forgetting the cord was still plugged in recently?

That's why I did this awhile back. Also so it stops getting covered in beat juice and sand.

Where do you get one of those????...I actually drove away this morning haha snapped the cord, I just spliced them back together, knock on wood, if there's a problem, my wall plug will flip the fuse.

Plug needed a little shaving down of the edges to make it fit. Front hitch receiver required, or you could just drill a hole in your bumper cover and install the plug straight onto it I guess.

Ah sorry my OCD nature is kicking in and you’re the second person haha. Houses don’t have fuses, they have circuit breakers.

If I were you I would replace the cord, they are about $20 and take about 5 minutes to replace if you have ramps and don’t have a bunch of covers in the way.

Check your OCD houses absolutely can have fuses. You won't find them in any new installs but plug fuse panels where the norm for decades and there are lots still out there installed.

Also in the UK since they use a ring and spur circuit instead of the branch circuit wiring method we use, you will find each spur circuit is also fused while the rings are protected by circuit breakers...

i cleaned the outlet on the car and went out for a drive. When I came back I tried again and it didn't short. I guess maybe the plug on the car was dirty or had some road crap on it perhaps?....

If the ends of either cord are wet/dirty it can cause a GFI to trip, that could have been the case.

    Haha well i stand corrected.

But commonly speaking I think you’d agree especially in Calgary almost no residential houses have fuses. On top of that both posters I was referring to were obviously referring to circuit breakers
