An amount of your taxes goes to paying money you owe. Money you owe is debt.

My mom says she's been paying the same taxes since she's lived here even though our debt has changed and we were debt free for a year or 2. except for a token check of 400 from ralph for selling of public assets and blowing up hospitals, and then not having to pay 40 a month for helath insurance the tax rates have been the same. dont get too excisted about debt, it changes nothing for us in reality unless the government sells unkwoing people the idea of austerity to transfer more of their money to the top.

Government debt doesn't matter? Tell that to Detroit. LOL I like your "my mom says" defense. That has got to be the weakest argument anyone could make. A) it's anecdotal B) it's difficult to prove or disprove and C) even if true it's no way near explaining what happens when gov't debt goes awry. I guess if you are below the poverty line your taxes would never change thus government should spend, spend, spend. What harm can it do?

I won't be shocked if the NDP win a minority government.

I will be shocked if any party wins a majority next year.
UCP will win a majority. Mendel is perfect for UCP. Dilute votes of Edmonton and NDP stronghold.

I think it will be a huge failure if UCP doesn't win a majority.

You think a party that has never ran a candidate outside of calgary is going to somehow win votes in Edmonton?

    Don't see it.

I'm about 90% voting UCP and still don't think there is more than a minority in Alberta.

All the ucp needs to do is to take back most of Calgary and they have a majority. Adding a half dozen rural ridings back and its a slam dunk.

It's a nice change from "the boss says" in all that auto stuff. Program is the same though, just a different channel - A running commentary based mostly on uninformed feelings and opinions instead of logic or fact. He trolls himself and, usually us haha

When the 'my mom says...' gets dragged out in a debate about debt and finances, i'm sorry but you're way out of your league because you lack the life experience in this kind of discussion.

We will consider your opinion though... if you share pics of said mother?

I used my mom because she's been paying taxes for 18 years longer then me in Alberta. Just making a point that tax rates are not connected to debt level. Seemed simple to me.

In fact they've been dropping as debt has gone up. Marginal tax rate combined on the rich was 84% in 1949, 80% in 1971 down to 46% in 1995 while the poor it'sbeen flat in constant dollar.

Debt is normal. Every modern country in the world has it. You know who has very low debt to gdp? Russia. Haha. How ya gonna twist that. Flat 13% personal tax, low debt. You should move, sounds like utopia for you guys.

My friend posted this but, zero idea if it's accurate. Is it?

"Notley shuts down coal fired power plants in AB then buys 196 Mw of power from Montana which is COAL FIRED.
    Just let that sink in."

Well a lot of electricity in Montana is coal generated, but there’s hydro and natural gas as well.

But regardless, 196 Mw seems like an awfully small number to get worked up about. If we can phase out the 5000Mw of coal production in alberta and only need to buy 196 from Montana that’s a rip roaring success and Notley should be commended for it.

Very small number indeed, and currently more than all the wind power being generated in Alberta at this particular momemt...

We need a windmill directly outside of the Alberta Legislature Building. We could power an entire city with all the hot air being blown around.

Is this a case to keep a coal plant running at less than 50% capacity rather than just buying shortfalls cheap from somewhere else? Can't really see an economic or environmental benefit to that. So I'd have to ask, what's your point?

I wouldn't doubt it's true, but electricity flows back and forth on a daily basis. We aren't a pure net seller, or buyer, we do both depending on demand.

Government debt does not matter in the bigger sense. If you have a balanced budget, all that will happen is that Trump will charge you more. Knew it was going to happen, as the entire USA economy is based on rewarding debt. If you get Billions of dollars in debt, you will be bailed out with money printing.

There is zero incentive to actually try be in a positive money position, that is unless you can hide it in a form of shadow currency or the like.

No, of course not. That's why I hoped someone informed would have a more complete thought which, seems to be the case. I hate the NDP but I hate misleading hyperbole more, fuck people are stupid.

I share the same sentiment. This is exactly why people don’t put rational thought into their voting.

They vote on what they “feel” about a political party not what they think.
