Yeah me and my mom were just talking about this this morning. She straight up said if I was trespassing on someone's property as a teenager and a farmer took a shot at me, she would have said it was my own bloody fault and if I complained to her about it she would have dragged my as back to the farmers place to apologize for disrespecting his property. If I was actually up to no good and it happened, she would have called the cops herself. We were taught respect growing up and how to live with the consequences of our actions no matter the cost. That is how it should be today imho...

101% This... As a shit-head growing up, I can confirm that good parents will not blame others for the shitty decisions their children make. I am extremely glad my parents sounded much like yours Bob... I hated it then, I understand and appreciate it now / that is how us parents will be with our little guy.

If I was a shithead that stole property and broke into places as a kid, if I got shot and died, my parents would be character witnesses against me 100%.

Some fucking people and their fucking children.

that was never stated anywhere. Maurice' s friends were posting a lot of places saying it was a ricochet... If what Phil said is true it would match a lot of what I read from the guys friends and families.

I'm actually surprised the charges were dropped... ricoccovhet or not hes basically admitted to shooting someone by being careless with his guns.

This is a perfect example of why our gun laws need to be clarified and changed.
There's a firearms lawyer in Edmonton who gave his interpretation; The ballistics report likely confirmed the ricochet was from a warning shot, which there is already precedence that warning shots are a "legal" deterrent. It's also possible the intruders witness statement contradicted the ballistics report.... all that adds up to the crown had no reasonable likelihood of a conviction....so they dropped it

My wife grew up in a small town.. as a teenager they would ride into farmers fields. They'd access lakes or ponds from farmers fields. They would go target shooting all the time....

No one ever shot at them or thought they would deserve it for doing what country kids do. But hey go ahead and continue to jerk each other off by saying everyone needs to be shot if their up to no good.

Kids do stupid things or go places they shouldn't in the country... maybe their just exploring an area out of curiosity. They don't deserve to be shot because of it.

You're making a far reaching "equal" comparison here imo. Also, I don't know what part of the world your wife grew up in but as a kid in small town/rural Saskatchewan in the 80's you can bet your ass my friends and I heard guns go off sometimes when we weren't where we should have been. And no, we weren't stealing - we were trespassing.

So does my anecdotal evidence trump yours?

Warning shots in Canada are a legal deterrent?? Do you know which case this stems from?

The Ian Thomson case for sure and the Gerald Stanley case as well would support that.

Farmer’s field vs farmer’s yard. BIG difference.

gwill has a huge bias on his opinion here, something in the past had to trigger it.

I also grew up in a small town much like your wife... There is a large difference between "exploring" and putting yourself in a situation that you might end up being shot... If you are 10 years old and running around in a field, it's a lot different than 20 years old in the driveway with 2 buddies lol

Yup. And we were never shot at but absolutely a rifle was fired in the air followed by "get the hell off my land" or the like. 100 percent different than this situation and, we didn't go back either. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I mean good lord, criminals looking to steal shit wont be in the middle of a 1/4 section in some desolate area quadding around, during the day time.

Its when things get dark, and close to the residence, is where these shit heads get shot.

Obviously if you're quadding around scaring cattle, expect some rancher to come around eventually.

LOL. I certainly disagree that we need to be shooting people in our yard over change in your vehicle. It's turned into a south park episode where people claim to be afraid for their life so let's shoot em dead...

I'm clearly in the minority on this one. I guess all the training they do for your fire arms license means nothing... it doesn't seem we are actually responsible for our bullets anymore.

It seems all we need is for it to be a bit dark and we will be able to shoot anyone anytime because we feared the unknown....

Just need to make sure not to leave any witnesses.

You're pretty much Gestalting this topic with hyperbole which frankly surprises me. No one but you is claiming open season and the only people deciding a life is worth "change in your vehicle" is the person stealing. If you know the homeowner has the right to defend himself and you still attempt to rob them, it is YOU who is devaluing your life and making it worth so little - not the homeowner.

Thank you for the best statement ice pretty much seen posted in this thread. I grew up in very small southern Alberta prairie towns of less than a hundred people. My brothers and I roamed all over the place and often with guns to do target practice and shoot gophers. We knew not to go into a farmer's yard, not to walk through planted fields, to close gates behind us and to not bother livestock.

But most important of all, we knew whose land we would be okay to be on and whose land it wasn't okay to be on. It also has to be noted that our Dad was one of the town's grain elevator agents so pretty much everyone knew who we were and we knew pretty much everyone who farmed around us.

Common sense just dictated to not be in someone else's yard, be it a farm yard or in town. But this common sense is a taught thing and certainly there are those who have a different sort of common sense than we grew up with - the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and usually people who will knowingly trespass into a farmer's yard for less than legal purposes probably didn't have the greatest role models when growing up.
    Will fuck off, again.
